Jill Phipps was an animal rights activist who was crushed to death by a lorry carrying calves to Coventry Airport for live export:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jill_Phipps

I'm sure most people in the animal rights universe will have heard of her, and some other people, as it was quite big news at the time, but I'm sure a lot of Indymedia readers from other backgrounds won't have a clue who she was.

Lynn Sawyer, I'm not sure why the aggression. I simply asked a polite question concerning a post that was lacking detailed information. I am young (17) and so I don't know much about the events of this person life and death. It happened a long time ago.

Despite the best efforts of some in the Animal rights movement to portray her as some sort of martyr in fact she was a failure through most of her life who did badly at school (arrogant and snobbish according to school friends), managed to get a manual job at the Post Office by her Dad's union connections and getting divorced while pregnant when her husband caught her having an affair with a friend of his.

She drifted into AR work after a dalliance with CND and then another failed relationship. The hardcore leadership of the Animal Liberation Front saw somebody easily manipulated and she was quickly talked into doing a couple of actions. Next she moved onto the protests at Coventry Airport which were beginning to fall apart for lack of support and it was there she died.

As a lorry arrived ten protesters broke through police lines and they were trying to bring the lorry to a halt by sitting in the road or chaining themselves to it when Phipps was crushed beneath the lorry's wheels; The inquest heard that the driver was distracted by a protester running into the road ahead of him. Most people in the AR movement think she was persuaded to kill herself on purpose as a source of publicity.

A woman easily manipulated now raised onto a pedestal by the AR scene in the UK.
