30 Days of Actions at Faslane

Faslane Flossie | 21.01.2012 18:37 | Anti-Nuclear | Anti-militarism

Sat 9th June 2012 will see the beginning of a 30 day campaign of direct actions against the Faslane Naval Base to commemorate 30 years of nuclear resistance at Faslane Peace Camp

Faslane Peace Camp are announcing 30 days of non-violent direct action against the Faslane Naval Base to mark the 30th birthday of the Peace Camp. Over the last year, a small group of us have been endeavouring to make Peace Camp a healthy and happy place to facilitate direct action against Trident. We are ready for action! The birthday celebrations will commence on Saturday 9th of June 2012 and continue until the 9th of July.

This week the First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond announced that an independent Scotland would be a nuclear free Scotland. Whilst these are welcome words, the response is that the MOD are reportedly looking into new venues south of the border in the fear that Scotland will win independence. We need to give a clear and unmitigated message that simply moving them is not enough. We are in a unique position to make this potential removal from Scotland mean an ipso facto end to nuclear weapons in the UK but our message needs to be full volume.

We are inviting local, national and international groups to take responsibility for a day of anti-nuclear activities, this can be a march to the base, a demo at the gates, a blockade, a mass trespass, a die-in... get creative! If you are a small group or an individual and want to team up with others, we can help choreograph partnerships. We can also facilitate workshops on peaceful direct action at Faslane so no activist experience is necessary. There will be lots to be done day to day and plenty of roles to fulfil during the 30 Days campaign and the time leading up to it so enthusiastic helpers (and donations) will be welcomed with open arms! Communal meals will be provided and there will be plenty of sleeping and camping spaces.

For more information, legal stuff and for details of our safer spaces, residency and alcohol agreements please contact  Faslane30@riseup.net or write to us at: 30Days, Faslane Peace Camp, Shandon, Helensburgh, G84 8NN.

An admittance of failure

23.01.2012 10:37

"30 years of nuclear resistance at Faslane Peace Camp"

Which has achieved what exactly ?

The Faslane camp is a perfect example of a campaign that has become a lifestyle choice for a few masquerading as a protest movement. Here we see time, energy and people being wasted while other campaigns that are likely to achieve results lack the little extra help they need. When you have mounted a 30 year campaign and it has produced absolutely nothing beyond a camp site for a few people then it is time to call it a day.

Surprised

Celebration of Persistence!

23.01.2012 17:19

The nuclear weapons are still here therefore the campaign is still needed. And with the possibilty of an independent Scotland also being a nuclear-free one this issue is going to be pretty near the top of many agendas in the next couple of years. Not the time to give up.

But surely campaigns are waged because people are committed to seeing things change even if at times there is no obvious hope of success. The generations of people who have campaigned against nuclear weapons especially the folk camped out at Faslane do not expect a few clicks on some on-line petition or even a direct action or two to produce overnight results and then whether it succeeds or not move on to the next thing. Abolition of Slavery took over 300 years. Persistence should be admired not derided!

Anyone visiting Faslane Peace Camp would quickly realise that what keeps them there is not a lifestyle choice. Although living by the side of a busy road with no electricity, little money and all that a west coast Scottish climate can throw at you does require a certain lifestyle. It's a tough one and good for the people who stick it out.

I hope lots of people are planning to visit in June and join their voices to the campers in calling for an end to this campaign, not because we've given up but because we've succeed in getting these damned weapons sent for decommissioning for good.

Support

What amazes me is how support for Britain having nuclear weapons is actually growing in this country !!! From the heady days of 1983 when we nearly saw them abolished to today support has risen by 24%

Comparing to slavery ?

24.01.2012 15:49

Putting aside for one moment the crass comparison to Slavery the reality is that CND is a movement that once had widespread support which now has very little. Even Kate Hudson has admitted that CND "has regretfully lost most of the support it had in the 1980s" and if a group as mainstream as CND can't get support then marginal campaigns like Faslane have got no chance.

Meanwhile the time and energy wasted there is unavailable for campaigns that really mean something.

Thank you to those at Faslane Peace Camp, and to old timer for sticking up for them.
You pick the fight that is most important to you, not the one which is easiest to win.
