Uranium Film Festival of Rio selected first Nuclear Films

Until the end of 2011, the 2nd International Uranium Film Festival received more than 50 documentaries, shorts and features from all continents that content nuclear issues - from uranium mining to atomic bomb tests, from Chernobyl to Fukushima. The festival received films from famous and directors like Peter Greenaway as well as productions from newcomers like the Italian filmmaker Riccardo Migliore, who is living and filming in the Brazilian state Paraiba.

2nd INTERNATIONAL URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL RIO DE JANEIRO 2012

Until the end of 2011, the 2nd International Uranium Film Festival received more than 50 documentaries, shorts and features from all continents about nuclear issues - from uranium mining to atomic bomb tests, from Chernobyl to Fukushima. The festival received films from famous and directors like Peter Greenaway as well as productions from newcomers like the Italian filmmaker Riccardo Migliore, who is living and filming in the Brazilian state Paraiba.

See here the first 13 films selected. Until March 2012 the Uranium Film Festival Team will select further 20 to 30 films for the screenings and the competitions in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for June/July 2012.

1. "Atomic Bombs on the Planet Earth", UK/The Netherlands, March 2011, Director: Peter Greenaway, Video Design: Irma de Vries, Producer: Change Performing Arts of Milan.

2. "Era uma Vez na Cidade Atomica (Once Upon a Time in the Atomic City)", Director: Riccardo Migliore Brazil/Italy, 2011

3. "The secret and the sacred. Two worlds at los Alamos", Germany 2003, Director: Claus Biegert, Producer Bertram Verhaag, Co-Production DENKmal-Film, HR, Arte

This film is about the history, heritage and horrors of the nuclear age in Los Alamos. The lab takes up forty-three square miles indigenous land of the Tewa people from the pueblos Santa Clara and San Ildefonso. Consequently, the local Indians are cut off from their traditional shrines of worship.

4. "Indian Point – Nowhere to Run", New York, USA, 2003, Director: Tobe Carey.

5. "The Red Button" (Czerwony Guzik), Poland, 2011, 52 min, Poland 2011, Directed by Ewa Pieta & Miroslaw Grubek

The film tells the dramatic story of Stanislav Petrov, the Russian officer who, in 1983, saved the world from atomic war.

6. "Uranium: A Poisoned Legacy", France, 2009, 52. min, Director : Dominique Hennequin, Production: Nomades TV

The film is a shocking investigation into uranium mining in Africa, Gabon and Niger.

7. "Blowin in the Wind", Australia 2005, Director: David Bradbury, Production Frontline Films

Blowin in the Wind by Oscar Nominee (1981) and multiple award winner David Bradbury gives a chilling insight into the ongoing hazards of depleted uranium (DU) weaponry used by the US in Afghanistan and Iraq; and now suspected of being tested in US/Australian ‘facilities’ (US spin doctor and propagandists re-branding from ‘bases’ to sound less threatening and permanent). These include the weapons range at Shoalwater Bay near Rockhampton, Queensland: where families have already experienced birth defects.

11. "Hiroshima A Mother's Prayer - Hiroshima Preces de Uma Mae", Japan, 1990, Production: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

12. "Buried in Earthskin", África do Sul, 2009, Diretor: Helena Kingwill

The film is an Investigative journey into the impact of nuclear power on the environment and peoples of South Africa, and a glimpse into potential alternative solutions.

13. "The Third Nuclear Bomb, The Veteran´s Accusation", Director Maurizio Torrealta, Italy 2008, Producer Rainews24 / Radio Televisione Italiana
