Why the Truth About Drugs?

Paola Martinez | 28.12.2011 18:04

In the Tampa Bay area, there were 681 deaths from prescription drug overdose in 2009, double the number of deaths in 2005.

Why the Truth About Drugs?

Every week the Tampa Bay chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World gets the truth about the harmful effects of drug abuse out to hundreds of people in the Tampa Bay area.  Volunteers from the chapter have partnered with 100 local shop owners in the area to distribute informative booklets about drugs of abuse, which include individual booklets on marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, and other drugs, including prescription pain drugs, which kill 7 people every day on average in the State of Florida.

“If someone can learn the truth about the harm that drugs WILL do to their lives without scare tactics or gimmicks, just the truth, they can make better decisions,” said Julieta Santagostino, Director of the Tampa Bay chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World. “The best solution to the drug problem, even today’s scourge of prescription pain drugs, is education. The very best thing is for someone never to start taking drugs in the first place.”

The explosion of prescription drug abuse has overtaxed law enforcement and is destroying families that have loved ones who fall into the deadly addiction. All around Tampa Bay and all over Florida, there are a large number of businesses billing themselves as pain-management clinics which are really nothing more than a sophisticated distribution system for those addicted to narcotic pain medication such as Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Percocet, Percodan, Hydrocodone, etc.

Local Foundation for a Drug-Free World volunteers and local storeowners have responded to this problem with a vigorous campaign of education. Throughout the area, the Truth About Drugs booklets are available at any given time in over 100 stores.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.
