Calais: Squat Demolitions

Calais Migrant Solidarity | 14.12.2011 22:53 | Migration | Repression

Calais squats are bulldozed whilst people are still sleeping inside...

Early in the morning yesterday, Tuesday 13th, bulldozers arrived without warning and began demolishing a building whilst people were asleep inside. The workers did not even check or ask if anyone was in the squat. The diggers only stopped after other people intervened shouting for them to stop.

The people inside managed to get out in time unharmed, and retrieve some of their belongings and blankets.

Today, Wednesday 14th, CRS (riot police) and PAF (border police) came to this same area around 8.30am. Around 15 cops went over to the house, which they attempted to demolish yesterday, and looked at the builing but did not enter. They seemed to decide that the situation was safe enough and the house, which had been peoples home, was demolished to the ground.

This of course is not an isolated incidence. Everywhere people go to try to sleep they are subject to raids, evictions and the destruction of their shelters and homes, alongside the regular ID controls, arrests and destruction of personal belongings. Banal and violent repression is the mainstay of life for many 'foreign' people in Calais, whether they have papers or not. The police work hand in hand with local authorities and other apparatus of the French State constantly making it impossible for people to live.
