Canada withdraws from Kyoto Protocol

Dirty hands | 13.12.2011 11:29 | Tar Sands | Climate Chaos | World

Canadian Environment Minister Peter Kent has announced that Canada is withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol, making the home of Tar Sands the first nation to pull out of the protocol in its 15 year history. He claimed the protocol "does not represent a way forward for Canada", and that "Kyoto, for Canada, is in the past".

He cited the financial cost of the protocol - $13.6bn or $1,600 per household - as the reason for this u-turn. This pricetag is due to its entirely reprehensible projects in the Alberta Tar Sands, which it has knowingly and happily carried out for decades. To get a sense of how lucrative a trade this is, Canada is now the largest supplier of oil and refined products to USA (yes, more than Saudi Arabia). Kent failed to mention any financial revenue whatsoever when presenting his financial assessment of Canada's environment and energy policy. He did however describe Kyoto as "the legacy of an incompetent Liberal government".

For years the Canadian energy industry has forcibly removed people from the land their families have lived on for thousands of years in order to invest in this project which brings in an obscene amount of money from oil sales to US and other countries. While reaping the profit, Kent and his cronies continue to subtly export the cost of this project onto Canadian taxpayers and the planet while exploiting the situation to make cheap shots against lefty politics.

Scum.
