what happened

01.12.2011 00:45

a group of people tried to join a picket line outside the CLR James library in Dalston. Almost immediately several vehicles full of cops pulled up. police dogs were also in attendance. the group were kettled and then violently arrested (by which i mean beaten up, in public, in front of distressed children and adults, for no apparent reason).

it literally happened so fast nobody had any opportunity to have broken the law even if they had intended to, which i have no reason to think they did. all were arrested pre-emptively,

local cops tell me they were arrested in order to prevent a breach of the peace, not because they had actually breached the peace.

they were taken to various stations across town including kensington, heathrow, and bishopsgate. in total there were 37 people arrested for doing absolutely nothing. lots of passersby have had their trust in the police utterly shattered. others who already knew about police brutality had their worst fears confirmed.

a small demo took place this evening at the nearest cop station, about 100 people gathered quietly and peacefully, and got nowhere. why did more people not attend? why was it not more militant? answers on a postcard please.

out of all the people on the streets today a total of 75 were arrested, of which 37 were at dalston this morning.
