Dusty & Dylan Go Fur-Free
NARN | 23.11.2011 00:14 | Animal Liberation
Earlier this week NARN and our supporters called upon the Leeds fashion boutique, Dusty & Dylan, to adopt a fur-free policy following fox coats being sold in the shop.
Earlier this week NARN and our supporters called upon the Leeds fashion boutique, Dusty & Dylan, to adopt a fur-free policy following fox coats being sold in the shop.
We are pleased to announce that this afternoon, we received an e-mail from the shop’s owner confirming that no real fur was to be sold by Dusty & Dylan in the future:
----------------------------------------------------
“…I have decided to no longer sell vintage fur items in the shop in Headingley. I understand that this causes offense (sic) to certain people & can also be damaging to my reputation….
Many thanks,
Helen Adderley”
----------------------------------------------------
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dusty & Dylan for making such a policy and request that supporters end contact regarding this matter with immediate effect.

This Email is a fabrication.
We are pleased and proud to offer a wide range of vintage fur and will continue to do so.
This extremist animal rights group knows full well their campaign has resulted in a lot of free publicity for us and an increase in sales of our vintage fur range. We will not be bullied by their tactics of abusing young female staff members.

Some further background to this
23.11.2011 11:06
This new focus involved direct confrontation with some of the young women who work for the company and in two cases following them home while shouting abuse. The police got involved as did a local woman's group who engineered a confrontation with the AR organisation involved to challenge them with regard to the verbal assaults on these young women. There was publicity in the local paper as well as an the Students Union in Leeds University, the result of this was that a number of people made a point of shopping at the company in solidarity with the abused women.
For some bizarre reason the AR group is now claiming they have won which presumably is some sort of face saving exercise however the whole thing is a valuable lesson in choosing tactics when planning a campaign and raises the question of whether a young woman working in a shop that sells a very small amount of vintage fur is a legitimate target for abuse and scare tactics, in my view she is not.

Legitimate targets
23.11.2011 12:11
These women chose to work in a shop that sells dead animal skins therefore they deserve no sympathy or support only vilification. So what if they got shouted at and felt a bit scared imagine how terrified the animals were that were trapped, shot and skinned. These women could choose to work elsewhere the animals had no choice.
The fight for animal rights is absolute, there are no innocent bystanders or unconnected parties.

Violence is still violence despite the justification you use.
23.11.2011 12:52
We are a women's organisation, run by women for women. Our aim is to protect women from the damage that violence can inflict on their lives. We believe that women have the right to live their lives free from violence and fear. This campaign of intimidation and abuse clearly fell into the category of violence and as such we mobalised to protect the woman involved. Although we are sympathetic to the broad aims of NARN and are supportive of animal rights in general terms we do not believe that verbal violence and physical intimidation against women is the way to achieve those aims. At least one member of the NARN team is known for having issues around woman of high self confidence and that was illustrated during the confrontation we set up.
We are confident our intervention has ensured there will be no repeat of the violence.

Do you mean Luke gets upset when women don't do what he wants ?

Priorities ?
23.11.2011 13:29
Yes they do, our priorities are the animals who have had their skins ripped from their backs. The feelings of a couple of animal abusing women are not important compared to that.

The tactics were legal

People who sell fur either for themselves or others can expect to have conversations with us. Although we respect the work done by Women's Aid of Leeds this campaign was really none of their business and unless they were coming down to support us should have kept away.

Well done Leeds Women's Aid
23.11.2011 16:45
Well done Leeds Women's Aid for taking on the extreme minority and putting them right! Hopefully we wont see a repeat of this and we can all move forward as one towards a progressive future for all be they human or non-human.
I am glad the situation has been settled peacefully, and hope other feminists haven't been put off embracing a progressive vegan lifestyle due to what has occurred.

The last thing the animal rights movement needs is your 'everyone is equal' brand of passive do nothing. We are in a fight to liberate millions of animals who are living and dying in agony. They are no less than the modern day slaves who were stolen from Afrika. Would you regard the women who worked for a slave trader as innocent ?
So they got a bit scared on their way home, tough. I hope they thought about how those animals must have been scared when they were being led into the slaughter house.

Drop the bravado. The fact of the matter is that you made the wrong call. You thought you could get away with harassment and stalking people, you were wrong. And now you're trying to save face because you realise people are reacting with revulsion at your tactics. For years to come NARN will be remembered as that creepy group that stalks women, you dug your own grave when you carried out that course of action. You were wrong and everyone knows it. You were called up on it and now you're embarrassed because someone dared to challenge you for violating the rights of others. Ironically this makes you the same as someone who owns a fur farm, you think violating rights is an acceptable course of action. In the same way a fur farmer thinks violating an animal to generate profit is acceptable, you think violating women is acceptable to generate a profitable outcome for your aims.
As a feminist I cannot support targeting women and making them afraid to walk the streets, it is a revolting tactic, women are already afraid enough as it is to walk the streets without your idiocy making the situation even worse. Yes they may work for a company that sells fur however that does not give you a right to violate them, to terrify them, to make them afraid of the city they live in. Two wrong do not make a right. You won't end the exploitation of animals by following women and targeting them in a predatory manner. That is the behaviour of chauvinists and rapists, not the behaviour of those that wish to fight for the rights of others.
It is clear you haven't learned anything, and it is clear you suffer from chauvinistic supremacy and fascist tendencies. As a feminist so long as you continue with your tactics of targeting vulnerable women I and other feminists around the country will support Leeds Women's Aid in calling you out until such a time you realise you are wrong.

If there are plans underway then no, I wouldn't want to butt in on what someone else is already doing.
If there are no plans, then possibly - how would I go about helping? Do you accept anonymous help or do you need to know someone's real identity first? Are technical changes to Indymedia easy to push through or is there loads of bureaucratic red tape to go through before things will be accepted?

re: help

There are no plans underway, other than a decision to rewrite the editorial guidelines at some point.
"If there are no plans, then possibly - how would I go about helping? Do you accept anonymous help or do you need to know someone's real identity first?"
For fairly obvious reasons, we cannot just hand out admin access to people we don't know anything about. The easiest way to get involved is to join the lists, and attend meetings.
"Are technical changes to Indymedia easy to push through or is there loads of bureaucratic red tape to go through before things will be accepted?"
The biggest single barrier to quick technological fixes is imo the Mir CMS, followed by a shortage of techs. The Indymedia uk site is run through consensus decision making.

"All targets are legitimate".
Apart from making you sound like George Bush or Barak Obama, an awful lot of people holding that view were hanged by the war crimes tribunals at Nuremburg and Singapore.
The logic, applied without limit of time, in your comment would also make animal abusers of fossil collectors. Presumably, NARN will turn up near the cliffs around Lymme Regis and start screaming abuse at young palentologists.
