Yesterday we reported that the English Defence League had claimed that Premiership Footballer, Joey Barton had joined the EDL. it appears that this was wishful thinking on behalf of the EDL and Queen's Park Rangers have contacted EDL News to issue the following statement:

BARTON DENIES FAR-RIGHT LINK
Queens Park Rangers Football Club and Joey Barton categorically deny any link between the midfielder and a far-right group who are claiming his support.
A photograph of Barton posing with a member of the group has been used to suggest the player is also a member.
Barton said: “As a Premier League footballer it is common to pose for photographs with people you do not know, as is the case here.
“I had no idea who the person was. I simply agreed to his request for a photograph.
“I have absolutely no connection with such a group.”
Barton has a pre-scheduled interview next week at QPR’s training ground to help raise awareness of the continued good work of Show Racism The Red Card.
Joey Barton tweeted the following this afternoon
Can I just state, that should any person, ask me for a photograph when I’m in public, that I am not aware of their religious, political or personal beliefs or affiliations. If I smile and oblige their request, I do so for no other reason, than they’ve asked politely and respectfully.
However this does not mean I am friends or share their beliefs. I categorically refuse to publicly release a statement, because I refuse to raise awareness in a group of mentally deficient right wing numpties. Hope u understand.
Last year a similar photo appeared with Lennon standing next to Katie Price and they then claimed that she supported the EDL. Price vigorously denied the accusation and it appears that this is yet another desperate attempt at portraying themselves in a positive light with celebrity endorsements..
