On the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan around 5,000 people gathered at Trafalgar Square to listen to some great speeches condemning the continued occupation and calling for an immediate withdrawal of troops. The speeches were followed by a short march to Downing Street for a protest.

Has Wikileaks stuck a thumb in it? Bunged up?

Isn't it funny how nobody wants to talk about the 'secret' names enclosed within the documents passed over from the banking whistleblower Rudolf Elmer to Julian Assange, at the backend of January of this year. Rather tight, don't you think?

rape?

assange should not be being feted like this, should not be making public appearances, while accusations of rape still remain uninvestigated. his presence there was a trigger for rape survivors in the crowd, and gives the impression that the movement is willing to dismiss sexist and abusive behaviours by men when they have celebrity status.
his comments since the allegations were aired make it clear that even if, highly unlikely but even if he is not guilty of the accusations, he certainly does have (a lot of) work to do on his attitudes to women and his behaviours around us. he is a flawed and sexist man.
many other people worked hard on wikileaks, he is not wikileaks just one part of it. at least one of the women who say they were abused by him also worked on wikileaks. where is the respect for her in all this?

Rebuttal

"rape?"
what rape?

"being feted like this",
hardly feted, he gave a good speech...."stop petitioning the government to stop war".....which goes against the grain of the Trot/Labour Party dominated "Stop the War Coalition" line. So it might explain why he hasn't been invited to speak before and is unlikely to be invited speak again.

"should not be making public appearances, while accusations of rape still remain uninvestigated."
that's the line of the British state which tried to deny him bail last December. The Swedish state has not bothered to question him, even though Swedish prosecuters have been in England a number of times and he is open to be questioned

"his presence there was a trigger for rape survivors in the crowd, and gives the impression that the movement is willing to dismiss sexist and abusive behaviours by men when they have celebrity status."
this is the juvenile liberal feminist line that preceeded the invasion of Afghanistan (see Pilger's speech on the use of liberal feminism in the invasion of Afghanistan). Feminism will make no progress until it stops beating the drum of male guilt, the gay movement/ straight guilt, the black power movement/ white guilt, Irish Republicanism/ Brit guilt etc etc

"his comments since the allegations were aired make it clear that even if, highly unlikely but even if he is not guilty of the accusations, he certainly does have (a lot of) work to do on his attitudes to women and his behaviours around us. he is a flawed and sexist man."
We are all flawed and have a lot of work to do in all aspects of our lives, it's not an argument against free speech.

"many other people worked hard on wikileaks, he is not wikileaks just one part of it. at least one of the women who say they were abused by him also worked on wikileaks. where is the respect for her in all this?"
He is the one, along with Bradley Manning, looking at a lifetime in prison or being killed in custody for exposing the nature of Britsh and American wars. The Stop the War, (peace movement in general) levels of solidarity for Assange and Manning have been pathetic.

Why would you incite anyone in Britain to resist the war, (see Pilger's call for civil disobedience) when the levels of solidarity for Manning and Assange (and lots of other folks who took direct action since2003) have been so piss poor?

presumption if innonence until found guilty?

12.10.2011 08:20

"assange should not be being feted like this, should not be making public appearances, while accusations of rape still remain uninvestigated."

As Pilger reminds us, they were:

"At the appeal hearing in July, Ben Emmerson QC, counsel for the defence, described the whole saga as "crazy". Sweden's chief prosecutor had dismissed the original arrest warrant, saying there was no case for Assange to answer."
 http://johnpilger.com/articles/the-getting-of-assange-and-the-smearing-of-a-revolution

So, with the Swedish Prosecutor having dismissed the original warrant, there are no charges outstanding against Assange. Now Sweden say they want him for questioning but have not bothered to interview him in all the months that this extradition hearing has been rumbling on.

This is all a theatre

13.10.2011 05:34

"All war is child abuse"... "Cut war not welfare"... No shit! Howbout we DO something? Marching from A to B is great fun I'm sure, but doing that one day a year is mere theatrics and only plays into the hands of those in power providing the illusion of dissent and democracy. This is an open question: how do we REALLY stop war?

escapee

innocent til proven guilty

13.10.2011 10:37

what about the women who have reported assange's sexually abusive behaviour? why are they so easily dismissed as liars? whether or not the (in)justice system in sweden or anywhere else treats their claims as true. women all over the world are raped and then told they do not have a case against their rapist. doesn't mean they were not raped. why not treat the women as innocent until proven guilty - innocent of lying?

wonderer

so guilty from the moment you're accused then?

13.10.2011 12:09

And if he ends up in solitary in a USA cell, having never been tried for rape will you still be calling him a rapist?

also wondering

De-legitimise Parliament, de-legitimise the MSM, de-legitimise the false political harmony between the US and UK, exploit financial worry and smother Afstan with requests for images, video's and testimony to use to counter the propaganda war here at home.

Ignore deadlines and write with beauty in mind. Write in the style of putting the pro-war lobby in the past tense.

Support those who, like you, are actively against the war.

Entertain no tolerance for those who try to justify the war, they are just cowards who don't have the courage to kill by their own hand...or have killed in quantity in their own hand and don't know any better.

In a crowd, pick the largest and hardest looking of your opponents, and go straight for the neck (this works in reality and in metaphor).

If somebody says you are a terrorist, there stands a real life terrorist.

Be kind, pleasant, agreeable, trustworthy and gentle at all times...but for the pro-war brigade, be disease in its most virulent and contageous form.

Pay attention to what you dream about, thats your conscience telling you what it thinks you should do next.

Often, in the midst of the fight, your opponent will often claim that the entire nation depends on the actions they take, and that you are an enemy of democracy to oppose them. Re-assure them that democracy is what brought you to them, and that what happens next is all for the best.

Never stop to help a pro-war pram-pusher...the babies always a bomb.

Don't worry too much about your finances, the poorer you are, the more poetic your victory.
