Real Democracy Now UK | 01.10.2011 07:32 | Globalisation | Social Struggles

On 15th October 2011 citizens across the world will take to the streets to express their outrage. We will not sit idly by while our rights are fundamentally undermined by the undemocratic alliance between politicians and corporations. Real Democracy Now invites you to join our peaceful call for action to say enough! It is time to raise our voices. Our future is at stake, and nothing can hold back the power of millions of people when they unite for a common goal.

Real Democracy Now was born from the 15M/Democracia Real Ya movement in Spain. Under the slogan "We are not goods in the hands of politicians and bankers", hundreds of thousands of people peacefully demonstrated for months in the country demanding a more participatory democracy, to reject corruption and to oppose austerity measures. Acampadas (tent cities) were set up in 57 central squares across the country, much like the first occupation of Tahrir Square in Cairo, including the famous acampada sol in central Madrid. The acampadas gave rise to popular assemblies, where ordinary citizens discuss the problems facing their communities and their society, identify common goals and reach consensus on a plan of action through an open and completely democratic decision making process. The movement has since spread around the globe and assemblies are now taking place in squares all over Europe and other continents.

The circumstances that are causing people to take to the streets in Egypt, Spain, Greece and elsewhere are mirrored around the world. Pressured by financial powers and organised corporate lobbying our political leaders choose to benefit a wealthy minority over the people they are meant to represent. Financial and political power is concentrated in the hands of a small minority, leaving the majority of the public without a say, without a voice in making the decisions that affect their everyday lives.

Here in the UK it is clear that our institutions of politics, media and police are corrupt. Britain's youth is a jilted generation with record youth unemployment, soaring university fees and housing that for most is impossible to buy and even too costly to rent. Whilst banks and big business continue to receive huge payouts and bonuses we see our NHS and other public services savagely cut: it's clear we're not "all in this together." The future we face is one of a widening gap between the minority of 'haves' and the majority of 'have nots.' Inequality only weakens communities and makes the desperate rioting and looting seen on our streets an inevitability.

How long can we let ourselves be shackled by such injustice? It is time for the people of Britain to take a stand for justice and equality and a future based on inclusive democracy for all.

We invite you to join our peaceful fight and spread the message that together, united, we can change this intolerable situation. Let's take to the streets on 15th October and tell the people that Another World is Possible.

The 15th October will not simply be a day of protest but a chance to hold our own peoples' assemblies where we may discuss the problems that we, as a society face and find new ways to solve our common problems. We will show the world what is possible when people join together.

As in Spain we ask people to come as individuals and not just as representatives of political parties, groups or unions. The strength of the Real Democracy Now movement lies in it's ability to unite all as unaffiliated indignant citizens.

Join us and our friends around the world in taking to the streets on 15th October to build a country and a better world, where human beings take priority over financial benefits and where people come before profit.

Bring banners, placards, music, theatre, dance, spirit, dreams, ideas and an open mind.

Alone we may be powerless but together we can change the world.

Global Democracy Statement:
On 15th October 2011, united in our diversity, united for global change, we demand global democracy: global governance by the people, for the people. Inspired by our sisters and brothers in Tunis, Cairo, Bengazi, Daraa, Palestine-Israel, Spain and Greece, we too call for a regime change: a global regime change. We will not come to global institutions, hat in hand, begging for policy change. In the words of Vandana Shiva, the Indian activist, today we demand replacing the G8 with the whole of humanity - the G 7,000,000,000. These are our global Mubarak, our global Assad, our global Gaddafi: the IMF, the WTO, global markets, multinational banks, the G8\G20, the European Central Bank, the World Bank, the Basel Committee on bank regulations and other undemocratic international institutions. Like Mubarak and Assad, these institutions must not be allowed to run people’s lives without their consent. We are all born equal, rich or poor, woman or man. Every African andAsian is equal to every European and American. Our global institutions must reflect this, or be overturned. Today, like the Mexican Zapatistas, we say "Ya basta! Aqui el pueblo manda y el gobierno obedece": Enough! Here the people command and government obeys! Like the Spanish Tommalaplaza we say "Democracia Real Ya": True global democracy now!"Today we call the citizens of the world: let us globalize Tahrir Square! Let us globalise Puerta del Sol.
