Western Saharah and the Arab Spring

With the Arab Spring is reshaping the political landscape of the region is now the time for the UN Security Council fulfil its obligation to enforce international law in Western Sahara and resolve the ongoing 36-year conflict there?



The All Party Parliamentary Group on Western Sahara are holding a meeting - Western Sahara and the Arab Spring - at 6.30pm on 6th September in House of Commons.

The meeting is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the UN negotiated a ceasefire agreement which brought to an end 16 years of fighting in the territory. Under the terms of the ceasefire a referendum on self-determination was promised but two decades later it has yet to be carried out.

Please come and join the audience and our distinguished panel of speakers to explore the historical, legal and political dimensions of this forgotten conflict and how it relates to the Arab Spring.

The meeting will be chaired by Cathy Jamieson MP.

Speakers will include:

• Dr Cationa Drew, lecturer in International Law at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)

• Paul Whiteway, Director of Independent Diplomat's London office.

• Y Lamine Baali, UK representative of the Polisario Front
