Police injured in Cambridge after confrontation with masked gang of youths heading for shopping centre

Two police officers were injured in Cambridge last night after officers confronted a gang of 30-40 youths who were heading towards the Grafton shopping centre.

The gang, some of whom were wearing face coverings, was reported to police at 11.35pm and officers attended while the police helicopter was launched.

As the group moved towards the Grafton, rubbish was thrown at police and two officers received minor injuries.

Five people were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

The group then dispersed and the incident was over within 20 minutes.

Deputy Chief Constable John Feavyour said: "Patrols were increased across the county to ensure there were sufficient officers available to deal with any incidents of disorder or concerns from the public.

"There was one isolated incident of disorder which was dealt with swiftly and resulted in five arrests.

"This type of criminal behaviour will not be tolerated and anyone who uses the emerging national issues as an excuse to break the law in the county will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.

"We understand there may be concerns and feelings of vulnerability within a number of communities. We will work closely with our partners and community leaders to address those concerns.”

A 16-year-old and 20-year-old arrested are currently in custody at Huntingdon Police Station. An 18, 19 and 28 year-old are currently in custody at Parkside Police Station. All five men are from Cambridge.

The force has said it has a contingency plan in place if trouble spreads, and 25 officers from Cambridgeshire were previously sent to London to help deal with the riots there.
