Riots - statement of support

Porkie Pie | 12.08.2011 18:01 | South Coast

Statement on riots issued tonight by The Porkbolter, long-standing anarchist newsletter in Worthing, Sussex.

FOLLOWING our last update, we received an “unsubscribe” email from a person who will remain unnamed, complaining that the piece we included on the original rioting in Tottenham had left him “feeling angry and helpless” and he didn’t want to read anything more of that nature.
If there is anyone out there who is unwilling to face up to the truth about what is happening on the streets of England at the moment, then please stop reading now before you come over all faint and have to lie down.
And please unsubscribe as soon as possible. We have no interest in sending out views and information to apparently intelligent, tuned-in, questioning people who, at the first hint of trouble in the air, turn into frightened bourgeois bunny rabbits, running squealing to the state begging for protection at any cost.
There’s no way anyone could condone every single act of damage or violence committed over three or four days of chaos – robbing people or burning down their homes is never to be applauded.
But we would remind readers that we at The Porkbolter have warned, time and time again, that we are living in an utterly corrupt and dysfunctional society which cannot be fundamentally altered by any number of reforms.
The whole thing has to be demolished so that we can make a fresh start on a civilization based on all the superior human values bulldozed out of the way by the steamroller of Progress – a sense of fairness, selfnessness, a respect for fellow citizens, a rejection of greed and war, a sense of responsibility towards the natural environment and the well-being of our fellow creatures. It would be nice if we could achieve this transition through a gradual dismantling of the mess we’ve got ourselves into and the building up of its replacement.
But, unfortunately, this isn’t going to happen because the Mafia that runs this country (and many others) doesn’t want it to happen and will do everything in its power to keep things heading in the same disastrous direction – more economic “growth” (ie: environmental destruction), more riches for the Fat Cats, more powers for the police state, more years of low-pay toil for the slave-masses.
So the only alternative is for all of us to do all we can to sabotage and destroy the juggernaut of neoliberal capitalism before it has killed our planet and all that live on it.
To do that, there is going to have to be a lot of anger and determination. And it will be no use if that anger resides solely in the hearts of wise old folk who’ve had time to work out exactly what is wrong with the world and what should be done about it.
We need the new generation to care. We need them to kick back against the system. We need them to join us in bringing it down.
Obviously many of those involved in the rioting this week were interested only in grabbing loot from shops and having a laugh.
But the overall Zeitgeist that brought about these astonishing scenes is something else entirely. Revolt is in the air and that can only be a good thing.
While all the Daily Mail bigots call for concentration camps, mass shootings and sterilisation of the underclass, it is up to the rest of us to speak the truth.
We must tell them that the sick society they cherish so much is worthless and we will shed no tears as it falls apart around them.
Generation Anarchy – we are on your side!
