...they hadn't called their new ship the 'Brigitte Bardot' - a notorious right winger, who just happens to also be into animal rights. She's actually been convicted of inciting racial hatred 5 times and has often spoken out against immigration. And just to top it off Sea Shepherd paint a picture of a stereotypical blonde buxom woman on the front of the ship.

The very least SS need to do is apologise, rename their ship and issue a statement condemning racism - but I won't hold my breath...

Fuck racism and fuck stupid single issue campaigns with no wider analysis.

Fair point, but, you're complaints only serve to hinder our aims on this post (which is to raise funds to help a group save animals). I assume you've (rightly) took this issue up with Sea Shepherd and I hope it gets resolved but either way Sea Shepherd needs to continue with its work and needs money to do that.
We didn't post this to start any kind of debate or discussion. Please come along if it's your cup of tea and don't if its not.

Your point of view above is at best highly suspect and at worst could be considered an apology for racism in the name of animal rights.

Suggesting that it's as simple as just coming if you don't mind the racist undertones (are they even undertones? Calling your ship after a racist is pretty blatant to me...) and staying away if you don't like them is politically naive 'animal rights' at best.

To clarify, Sheffield Saboteurs, all of its members and the poster of the above article and comments (me) are all 100% anti-racist & anti-speciesist.

If the above comment came across as too blunt its mainly due to the frustration that Indymedia followers never fail to bring with comments on Indymedia news.

If something is worthy of telling the world about, which this info about the naming of the Sea Sheperd ship is, then write a news page about it. If something isn't then don't distract attention from people articles with comments about it.

How can you be anti-racist if you support an organisation which ignores the racism of key activists in the movement, and even rewards it by naming a ship after them.

By naming a ship after an well known racist, whose husband was closely involved in the National Front, it is clear that the Sea Shepard is institutionally racist.

Hi again,
I want to comment on what has been said here although this is an old post. I'm speaking as an outsider ( not yet a member of this group) so what I have to say should have no repercussions upon them. I am just sick to death of people who speak up for truth and for the voiceless being labelled racist. I am proud that sea shepherd named their ship after a woman who speaks out for truth and justice. She would presumably say the same about any person, regardless of race, creed or colour who murdered sheep in a most disgusting way for their feast days. Or anybody who were immigrants in a country and inflicted their laws and views on that country's native people. She was fined for speaking the truth, that doesn't make her racist. She has been supportive of Sea Shepherd and stood on the ice caps with the captain, putting herself between the hunters and the baby seals they were butchering to death. In my book that makes her a real life heroine who should get the recognition that she deserves, not hefty fines because the government's are afraid of upsetting the Muslem community in that country.
