Inqlab Against the Cuts! A Benefit night for destitute asylum seekers in Brum.

Inqlab! | 01.07.2011 22:34 | Anti-racism | Migration | Public sector cuts | Birmingham

The Con-Dem government's austerity drive is due to wreak even more devastation on the lives of some of the most oppressed and marginalised people in the UK. Come and show your support for a small human rights advocacy charity, working to improve the lives of thosewho have fled persecution and been left in destitution by the UK's racist immigration policies.

Birmingham collective Inqlab are hosting a DJ fundraiser at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath on Friday 22 (8p-2am) July to raise money for a local charity, which provides legal support for asylum seekers. This marginalised group is suffering even further as a result of the Coalition Government’s cuts.

Line-up:
• Roc 1: one of Birmingham's l...egendary hip hop DJs (A Few Good Men/Momentum)
• MODLOLO: hip hop, soul, jazz
• VJ Edouble D: hip hop, r'n'b, neo-soul and broken beats (A Few Good Men)
• Scampi : (Peacekeeper Soundsystem)
• Souljahowie (Zimbabwe) : Revolutionary Reggae
• Inqlab residents: The Hussain Brothers: underground soul, alt hip-hop.
All artists are playing for free, giving their time and energy to support those people who are facing the cuts head on and who are most vulnerable.

The money raised will benefit a fund within Birmingham’s Asylum Support and Immigration Resource Team (ASIRT). Sakib Akram, a student social worker on placement with ASIRT, set the fund up last year.

Sakib stated; “I was shocked to see the levels of poverty experienced by many of ASIRT’s clients in Birmingham. Many are left destitute ...as a consequence of an immigration system, which denies people fleeing war, persecution and starvation access to welfare benefits and the right to work. They are reliant on support from charities such as ASIRT and the goodwill of friends and acquaintances. Our fear is that the situation will get worse for this marginalised and oppressed group of people in the light of the economic climate in which access to welfare support is set to become even more restricted”
