J30 March in Manchester

At least 3,000 union members and supporters marched through Manchester on the day of the public sector strike.

The march began on Oxford Street near the universities, as demos in Manchester usually do, but for once the police did not divert it down backstreets as soon as it approached the town hall. The march went along the main thoroughfare of Deansgate and ended in a rally at Castlefields.

There was but one FIT photographer on the whole march, who was urged by one demonstrator with a megaphone to "stop filming innocent protestors and join the march." The FIT officer looked down at his shoes, but carried on filming.
