Free Charlie The Monkey Campaign

Animal Defence Society | 14.06.2011 20:34

ABUSED, LONELY AND CHAINED UP - CHARLIE HAS NO LIFE. WE ARE DEMANDING THAT THE THAI EMBASSY FORCE THIS BAR TO HAND OVER CHARLIE TO A SANCTUARY.

We don’t know how old Charlie is and the campaign even named him as we don’t think he had a name.

Charlie has no access to shelter. He is chained up by the neck (like a slave) that is connected to a pole stuck in the ground. It is clear that Charlie lives chained to the ground with no shelter all the time. Guests are encouraged to throw beer bottles and other objects at Charlie for entertainment. Many people did throw things at Charlie.

The staff were trying to make guests stay for dinner by telling them they were going to feed Charlie beer at 7pm for entertainment. Charlie had a rope around him, that people cannot cross, otherwise Charlie would attack you and bite you. He looked very sad and angry and tried to attack many people that would come near him.

A person told a member of staff staff they shouldn’t treat a monkey like that… they replied and said “who cares its just a monkey”.

We are demanding that the Thai Embassy force this bar to hand over Charlie to a sanctuary.

What Can You Do

Please sign our petition by going to:  http://bit.ly/iiW5bC

The strategy for this campaign at the moment is the use of petitions. This is likely to change should the petition be ignored.

This is a difficult situation

I have a lot of experience campaigning for primate protection and unfortunately Charlie's situation is far from unique. Across Thailand monkeys are kept in similar conditions, forced to perform degrading tricks for tourists and therefore I'm not too convinced by this campaign because, (in my opinion), I feel that pressuring the Thai government to improve their welfare laws as this would allow more room for manoeuvre to challenge Charlie's oppressors.

However, regarding this specific campaign. I'm assuming you have contacts on the ground over there, right? There's a desperate need for more pictures and ideally a video which would help personalise the struggle and help people to build affinity with Charlie so I would suggest you organise that asap. I can also assure you that a petition isn't worth the paper it's written on, and online petitions are worth even less, so I sincerely hope you have an effective plan B.

If you want our help leave us a post on our Facebook page or leave a comment here and we'll get back to you via email.

Until we're all free
