Libya: Heaviest blitz yet brings terror to Tripoli

Franz Weber | 25.05.2011 11:30 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War

NATO has launched its most intense bombardment yet against Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi's stronghold of Tripoli with a series of airstrikes causing explosions in the Libyan capital.
The international community has stepped up raids and diplomatic efforts against the regime in a bid to break a virtual stalemate, with the rebels in the east and Col Gaddafi maintaining his hold on most of the west. The Nato attacks came in rapid succession within a half-hour time span, setting off more than 20 explosions and sending up plumes of acrid-smelling smoke from an area around Col Gaddafi's sprawling Bab al-Aziziya compound in central Tripoli.

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said at least three people were killed and dozens wounded in strikes that targeted what he described as buildings used by volunteer units of the Libyan army. Nato said in a statement that a number of precision-guided weapons hit a vehicle storage facility adjacent to Bab al-Aziziya that has been used to supply regime forces "conducting attacks on civilians".

It was not immediately clear if the facility was the only target hit in the barrage. Bab al-Aziziya, which includes a number of military facilities, has been pounded repeatedly by allied air strikes. ............ M O R E:  http://news.scotsman.com/world/Heaviest-blitz-yet-brings-terror.6773906.jp

Response/ debate??

Mmm...'rebel betrayers'?! Does an article like this not deserve a reasoned reply/debate on Indymedia? Or is the consensus to ignore such comments because of the sentiment they contain? Seems like a reasoned debate on Nato intervention on Libya is a really important issue for the european libertarian movement to tackle; so is it happening elsewhere or are indymedia posts a good place to debate such issues?

What do people think??

erm, its all about...

as far as i'm aware extremist libyan islamist groups (many fresh from iraq) are being armed and funded by the west and are being instructed to set up banks and sell oil because the west wants to secure libyan oil (esp the exploration rights) as well as stop gadaffi instituting a new gold backed currency for opec to trade oil in thus destroying the dollar as a world currency and crashing the american economy. western powers are going all out to assassinate gadaffi and his backers and are not too fussed about 'collateral damage' on the population (using depleted uranium on the population like in iraq for instance, or killing a score of civilians in an individual air strike).

oh, and there's also the issue of securing one of only two ports in the mediteranean that the west does not control (the other being in Syria, where the russians have planned a massive naval base), and using libya as a base to control MENA, as well as kicking china out of the running for future libyan oil contracts (hence the chinese evacuation of 30,000 of its workers in libya).

the humanitarian issue is being used as propaganda by the western empire to justify this in the mainstream press. The next stop is iran. the propaganda is already in full swing (mainstream stories of iranian missile bases in venezuela, iran linked to 9-11, iran causing the uprsings in bahrain/syria, etc)

what's to discuss? it's pretty clear that western intervention in libya is simply about empire. there is no humanitarian agenda. never has and never will be. it's just the usual story of empire given a fluffy coating to make it more digestible for the masses.

So you would be happy and content to sit back in your chair and watch while the Libyan forces shelled civilians?

This is the part where you accuse me of:

A: Being a troll
B: Being naive
C: Being uninformed
D: Being a stoop for the MIC.

etc. etc. etc.

I however have spent a great deal of time in Libya and the sooner Gaddafi is swinging by his neck the better.

What do people think!

I think the people are utterly disgusted by this clear and obvious attempt at regime change.

Obviously what didn't work for Labour and the Republican's is something the Conservative and Liberal shower feel must be made to work for them.

Just goes to show that our government is a sham and a complete fraud.

We in the UK are governed by the US.

It is time for us to consider a violent revolt.

How about you make your identity known Daisy, and we'll all come over and show you what a stretched neck feels like!
