Remembrance march

On the 1st June last year Fran passed away after losing a long and courageous battle against cancer. Fran found all cruelty to be abhorrent and spent many years of her life campaigning against animal cruelty in all its forms. She actively campaigned against vivisection at Oxford University from 2004 until stopped by the severity of her illness.
With Fran's passing, not only did we lose a friend, but the animals lost a tireless campaigner on their behalf. The remembrance march was held to celebrate Fran's life and also to remember the countless animals that have died such lonely and agonising deaths at the hands of Oxford University scientists.
People attending the march met on Broad Street, here a couple of speeches were made by some of those who had been both close friends of, and fellow campaigners with Fran. Then the march set off, with people armed with banners, placards and leaflets to inform those it passed of the horrific animal suffering taking place inside Oxford University.
The march passed the Oxford University Animal Lab, here we stopped to lay a wreath and hold a silence whilst we quietly remembered our friend, Fran and the thousands of animals killed by this institution.
As the march progressed along Mansfield Road, the Oxford University security team was laying in wait, it was clear that they were trying to goad us and get a reaction. To those of us used to the sneaky and underhand ways of Oxford University this came as no surprise. After expressing our contempt to the security, the march carried on its way. Throughout the event, the eighty campaigners taking part conducted themselves with both dignity and passion.
The march ended at Gloucester Green; here words were said by several of Fran's friends in celebration of her life.
Throughout the duration of the march, a SPEAK information stall was manned at Gloucester Green, much support was received from the public and as usual many people were genuinely shocked to find out about the barbaric and unnecessary experiments carried out on living creatures in the University laboratories.
Fran may no longer be with us, but her passion to end all animal suffering lives on in all those who continue the fight against animal cruelty.
