Sisters of Resistance respond to OG Niki

Sisters of Resistance | 17.05.2011 18:23 | Analysis | Anti-racism | Gender | Birmingham

A group of Sisters of Resistance respond to OG Niki and reflect on the ways in which her music, and people's responses to it, arise at the intersection of racism and sexism in a "dehumanising capitalist" culture.

Sisters of Resistance, a radical, non-hierarchical, revolutionary, international, vegan, feminist collective, have published an analysis of the young female grime artist/rapper OG Niki.

At the tender age of 17 OG Niki has attracted the attention of half a million youtubers and has achieved status as a trending topic on Twitter globally and across the UK.

The young woman, from Birmingham, seems to have attracted so much attention due to the extremely explicit content of her lyrics. SoR look at the implications and limitations of OG Niki's music.

They criticise a misogynist culture that vilifies women like Nikesha while failing to address the root causes of her actions and attitudes.

They also claim that she has emerged as the logical conclusion of a hyper-sexualised generation that has been indoctrinated with a souless, dehumanising, consumer capitalism which has reduced human interactions such as sex down into marketing tools to sell us products that we do not need and that the planet can not sustain.

SoR also provide further reading and a variety of hyperlinks for those interested in engaging with a critical analysis of popular culture and the continued oppression we face from sexism and racism under what bell hooks describes as "imperialist, white supremacist, captialist, patriarchy."
