145 protesters facing imprisonment for March 26 occupation of Fortnum and Mason

Defend the Fortnum and Mason 145 | 10.05.2011 12:00

145 protesters who took part in the occupation of Fortnum and Mason on the 26th of March are facing imprisonment for aggravated trespass after they were arrested when leaving the store in the evening. Yesterday they appeared in court but their cases were adjourned. The state seems determined to make an example of these protesters by jailing them. Therefore they need all the support they can get.

Ag trespass

This is clearly a political court case and as such really bad and a lot of support should be provided. However, jail terms for aggrevated trespass? I know it is technically possible but does anyone actually know of any case where someone have got a jail term for this charge without quite serious previous convictions? Just saying, don't panic...

Just wondering

Don't Exagerate

In fairness it's a fairly standard case of aggravated trespass- trespass which prevents lawful business. Maybe you can argue that due to tax evasion their business isn't lawful, but seems like a bit of a long-shot to be honest.

As for the state making an example out of them? The maximum sentence is 3 months but I really can't see them sending a bunch of middle class, high profile, peaceful protesters down for this. Probably just be a fine, maybe community service if people have a bad record.

Not that you don't deserve support and solidarity, just don't get too carried away with the whole martyrdom line.

sorry i dont wanna piss you off but i think it is really egotistical and insistive to mess around with with call outs for support like this.
your not gonna go to jail for standing in a shop
it is SOOO fucking typical of the kinda people who do these actions to make a big deal out of it but its nothing really i mean its great you stood in the shop but the state issent targeting you, it targets poor people and asylam seekers and travelers not university students in a shop.
i think what you were doing was great but please dont post stuff that lauughts in the face of people that actually suffer repression. please just recognise your privlige.
your gonna be ok 1000 of people get nicked for things like aggrivated tresspass all the time and are fine.
sorry for the rant. just dont exagerate!
xx

maybe those of you dissin people who are calling for solidarity should consider the words of the policy exchange UK, type the name into you tube and watch their video on UK Uucut, particularly the bits about likening UK Uncut to bomb weilding terrorists! with the help of Policy Exchange UK, the cops are starting to clamp donw on UK Uncut style groups, just ask the lincol and nottingham Uncut groups who were followed incessently by FIT on saturday during their peaceful demos....remember FIT is for watching 'domestic extremism'....just thought id say my bit.......solidarity to the F AND M occupiers.

I can quite sympathise with the idea that a bunch of middle class weekend warriors are overreacting to the potential consequences of their actions. But please consider this for a moment: if it is possible to imprison even one person from a group that is seen as sensible, articulate, respectable and part of the middle classes then it becomes so much easier to fit up a 19 year old bloke from a sink estate with no GCSE's and a tendency to say fuck a lot.

The Fortnum and Masons arrests gives the Police 145 chances to make arrest and prison a standard response to some forms of peaceful protest. In the long run it is not only about protecting existing protestors. It is about winning a fight that the Metropolitan Police picked with lawful protestors. That was not a fight the protestors chose to make.

Given that the protestors were locked into Fornum and Masons for a reasonable length of time by the Metropolitan Police (and there is video evidence on Youtube showing this being arranged by Metropolitan Police Officers) then there is a legitimate question: could the protestors have avoided the aggravated trespass. In other words, did the Met fit them up by using kettling tactics.

The Metropolitan Police are following their own agenda (again) which will have dire repercussions for a wide range of protest. Like it or not, solidarity with a bunch of middle class twats might not be optional.

If you cannot take the mix of language here, then you miss the point of the comment: you cannot assume that apparently middle class people are on a different side. Just like (you might assume) middle class people assume that a sensible argument wins the day.
