The Libyan League for Human Rights at the European Union

The Libyan League for Human Rights (LLHR) was invited to take part in three days of activities at the European Union in Brussels on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd March 2011, organised by the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) represented by Michel Ballout and Gregoire Thery. The LLHR delegation included Mr. Ali Zidan, spokesman of the Libyan Interim Transitional National Council (ITNC) in Europe, and Mr. Khaeri Aboushagor, UK representative of LLHR. They had the opportunity of meeting with the ministers of the Council of the European Union and of participating in an informal joint meeting at the European parliament bringing together members from Subcommittee on Human Rights and Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as delegations from the committees that deal with the EU relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Peninsula. Mr. Aboushagor also had the opportunity of informally meeting with members of the cabinet of the president of the European Parliament, the cabinet of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, the cabinet of EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fülle, and with Mr. Hugues Mingarelli, Managing Director of the European External Action Service’s Middle East office.

LLHR representatives used the opportunity to convey the Libyan people's thanks and gratitude for the European countries that supported the UNSC resolution 1973 and for their unwavering support of the Libyan people in their struggle to be free. They were able to brief ministers, representatives and officials of the EU on the current human rights situation in Libya, on the medical and humanitarian assistance required, on issues concerning Libya post Gaddafi, and on the urgent need to take all steps that will stop the Gaddafi regime from committing more atrocities.
