attempt to change squatters rights! protest on 17th April in London

In response to Kenneth Clarke's recent statements that he vows to end squatters rights we have decided we can't sit by and let this happen without a peaceful show of unity.

If squatters rights are abolished it will make around 25,000 people at least homeless on the streets of London. Currently the vast majority of these people through no fault of their own are only not homeless because of squatters rights. These people are from all walks of life and are not the scum the media loves to portray us. We realise the council's & government are over stretched and incapable of housing us so we took matters into our own hands and found our own accommodation.

Don't believe the scare stories, squatters are people too, and the majority of us if have squatted somewhere which is infact in use will leave peacefully & immediately. We know what its like to be homeless & don't want anyone else to suffer the same fate.

Occasionally some people mis-use squatters rights but there is already law in place that makes sure home owners can get their properties back immediately if this happens. Don't believe all the scare stories you read in the papers... The people who mis-use squatters rights don't deserve to be branded the same as us. We look after empty properties, pay the bills, have jobs, do good in the local area & have good relations with the property owner / police, etc. And if we have wrongly squatted somewhere will leave immediately without dragging it through the courts. We are all humans after all & we all need a roof over our heads.

But whilst there is an estimated 250,000 empty houses in the UK why not let us use them? Imagine if we all went onto the housing list? It would cripple the economy & local councils. Also imagine what would happen if the government made it illegal to squat. What would 25,000 disgruntled people do?

Lets all unite together peacefully on the 17th April to show the government just how crippling 25,000 homeless squatters are. The 17th April is the London Marathon & if Kenneth Clarke pushes forward with his mission I urge every squatter to make a stand (or a run) peacefully just so Mr Clarke can see with his own eyes just how many people he'll have to re-home if he abolishes squatters rights.
