World-famous anti-nuke campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott talks the Japanese nuclear disaster with Radio host Alex Smith of Radio Ecoshock. Is it the death knell of the nuke power industry? How much of Japan will be uninhabitable? Plus implications for U.S., Canada, and France. 28 minute interview March 23rd, 6 MB.

Dr. Caldicott says parts of Japan are uninhabitable, and both North America and Europe face the same risks.

Even without nuclear accidents, the normal operation of the industry leads to long-term elevation of cancers and birth defects. The impacts are passed down through several generations, especially by males.

What country will be evacuated next?

We specially consider American reactors and the Canadian nuclear industry. How France could collapse with one big accident, like Japan. The on-going pollution of Europe even with "normal" operations, venting, and accidents. The impossible situation of tens of thousands of tons of waste.

The Union of Concerned Scientists reports that few "spent" fuel pools in the U.S. are connected to emergency backup generators, and NONE have battery backup. Even though these spent pools are the largest repositories of radioactive materials in the world. Japan has overloaded it's pools, including at Fukushima.

As we report, four of six reactors at Fukushima Dai-ichi are smoking, with workers evacuated, able to do nothing. Caldicott says these workers will die soon, but the long-term effects will appear in the public in 5 to 15 years, and for several generations thereafter.

This accident is far from over, may continue for months, or years.

Those evacuated from Fukushima Prefecture will be shunned, as Chernobyl victims, and the original atomic blast victims were. No one will marry them, out of fear of genetic defects.

Caldicott gives an amazing interview with the dark perspective from a doctor who lectures world-wide on this subject, in addition to her weekly radio show "If You Love This Planet".
