The Syrian protest movement was launched on 15 March 2011 via a Facebook group entitled "the Syrian revolution against Bashar al-Assad in 2011" which demanded an end to corruption, humiliation, and poverty.

Residents say the victims were shot dead in an attack on the city’s Omari mosque in the early hours of the morning, where protesters had gathered.

On Monday, thousands of people took part in anti-government protests in Dara'a in southern Syria, following the funeral of a youth killed during protests in the city. Syrian troops are currently deployed throughout the city, dealing with the unprecedented protests in this city which lies just 120 km south of Damascus.

On Thursday, Syrian authorities charged 32 activists with attacking the reputation of the state, a day after a rally outside the interior ministry, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
The protesters, including rights activist Suhair Atassi, were detained a day earlier at a Damascus rally organised by the relatives of political prisoners to petition for their release.
Human Rights Watch has called for the release of all detained demonstrators, and independently confirmed that 18 people had been taken into custody.
