March 26th - All out against the cuts

IMC UK Features | 20.03.2011 22:10 | Public sector cuts | Workers' Movements

Latest News: A full roundup of the day and timeline of the events as they unfolded are on Indymedia London.

March 26 looks set to be the biggest street mobilisation in Britain since the anti-war march of 2003, with hundreds of thousands likely to join the TUC's "March for the Alternative". As the Con-Dem government escalates the class war with its cuts package, and following the rebellious creativity of the recent student protests, not to mention the uprisings sweeping the Arab world, will the crowd be content just to obey the TUC leaders and march from A to B? Following several calls to turn it into a day of real action against the government and the economy [NetworkX | Rallying Call | UK Ungoverned], various groups have announced plans including feeder marches, blockades and more. In particular, occupations should be a key theme as UKuncut plan to take over Oxford Street and another secret target, and others call to "Occupy Everything". Will this be the turning point where the energy and rage seen on the streets this winter spreads beyond the youth to workers and all who will stand and fight? Read more...

Following months of demonstrations, occupations of town hall's and other buildings, road blockades and widespread campaigning, the national protest against the cuts and for the alternatives is finally taking place on Saturday 26th March at 11am.

Whilst the TUC has announced "there are no official feeder marches" in an echo of the failure by the NUS to support their own students, rank and file anti-cuts campaigners are preparing several feeder marches: The Education Bloc from ULU, a South London feeder from Kennington park, including a Radical Workers Bloc and a North London Feeder from Camden. Other groups are meeting in advance to march together on the day including a newly announced East London Dissident feeder march.

Marches in other Regions?

21.03.2011 11:15

I was just wondering if there are any events planned for the big day anywhere else other than London. I cannot make it to the capital, could make it to Manchester, Leeds or somewhere near. If anyone knows I would be very grateful, thank you.

Alexander

Organise your own

Alexander, if you're not going to London, that's okay. Get together with others and start something off in your own town. The wider the protests, the better.

Social Media and Protesting

23.03.2011 12:58

I'd like to add some thoughts to this whole Sukie and social media thing, because this matter becomes more and more important recently.

First of all: No digital communication can be claimed safe. Perhaps the Met's arsenal is limited, because they are not a specialised intelligence service, but they have access to other government agencies whose only purpose is to gather intel on any possible threat against the government. Since all protests are challenging those in power, no matter how tiny is it, these services are always "on the case". Digital communication in our times is highly centralized (yes, the internet IS CENTRALIZED too!) therefore:
1. It can be wiretapped easily, because it was designed for this reason.
2. It can be manipulated easily, because this its primary purpose.

Anytime if you use any digital communication, you must be aware of this, and restrict the information to protect your privacy. People do not credit recently much to privacy: Many of us thinks that they have nothing to hide (the "good" protestors) their behaviour in delicate situation is as much open as having some chat about the last night party on facebook. In fact, although unaware their exact role, they are the perfect snitches and gossip mongers. Anyone, who seeks to challenge the power, should be careful to choose what kind of friends she is informing even verbally.

Concerning the social media, I know for fact because of my profession, that these means of communication are highly useful for any policing operation. We should listen more what Richard Stallman said in his conference speech, which was published on this site ( http://london.indymedia.org/articles/7759). Using server-client based solution is as "evil" as one can think of, leaving us vulnerable to any external policing.

My proposition is:
1. DO NOT USE any social network, neither sukie, neither facebook, twitter so on. I know this sounds almost ridiculous in these "social networking" times but it is more than dangerous.
2. Look for stone-age alternatives and give more attention to the credibility of the person you sharing experiences and information with rather than looking for some huge number of followers!
3. Look for means to obfuscate any central information network, like cell phones, the radio communication between cops and TUC filths/stewards, sabotage the mainstream media presence!
