David Cameron: We will use military force to free Libya

dandelion salad | 02.03.2011 21:17 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Repression | Sheffield | World

The US and NATO bases in Italy are preparing for military action against Libya. Britain, France and the United States have dispatched hundreds of military advisors to Libya to set up military bases in the country's oil-rich east. British and US special forces entered Libyan port cities of Benghazi and Toburk on February 23 and 24.

1) UK PM Cameron: We do not in any way rule out the use of military force against Libya (28 February 2011)

2) UK PM Cameron: We value our security co-operation with the Persian Gulf countries highly (22 February 2011)

“For the future of Libya and its people, Colonel Gaddafi’s regime must end and he must leave. To that end we are taking every step possible to isolate the Gaddafi regime, deprive it of money, shrink its power [...] With respect to all these actions, Britain is taking a lead. [...]

And we do not in any way rule out the use of military assets [against Libya]. [...] I have asked the [UK] Ministry of Defence and the [UK] Chief of the Defence Staff to work with our allies on plans for a military no-fly zone [in Libya].”

[UK Prime Minister David Cameron, statement on the situation in Libya, The House of Commons of the British Parliament, London, 28 February 2011] [1]

“We value our security co-operation with Kuwait and the [Persian] Gulf [countries] highly. [...] The continued failure of the Middle East Peace Process to achieve justice for Palestinians or security for Israelis the threat of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon and the growing threat from Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are not just security problems for the region, but security problems shared by the whole world. [...]

I come here today offering a new chapter in Britain’s long partnership with our friends in this region. Over generations we have built a partnership based on our shared interests in prosperity and security. But in a changing world ours must now also be a partnership that recognises the importance of political and economic reform.”

[UK Prime Minister David Cameron, speech on UK’s relationship with the Middle East, The National Assembly of Kuwait, Kuwait City, 22 February 2011] [2]

There is no way the UK could use military force against Libya. No aircraft carriers, no spare soldiers, no anything really. Forget it.

Of course, you may be quite happy to sit back and watch Gaddaffi slaughter his own people.

Press Release: Libya – US/ UK/ European interference not welcomed by protestors

Libya – US / UK / European interference not welcomed by protestors

Press release by The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), 2 March 2011

IHRC opposes military intervention in Libya by ‘West’

IHRC is deeply concerned by increasing rhetoric from western leaders discussing military intervention in Libya.

Protestors and groups involved in the opposition to Colonel Gadafi’s regime have categorically stated they do not want external military support to bring about change in Libya.

IHRC Chair, Massoud Shadjareh stated:

“The turmoil in Libya should not be used as an excuse for Western interference in that country’s affairs. Such discussions are a cynical attempt to gain control of Libya’s resources and crush a nascent independent state that could represent its peoples.

“Clearly the more the people of the region are politically represented, the less likely they will be to support the economic, political and social policies that have favoured the ‘West’ and resulted in the denial of the peoples’ basic rights.

Americans must say no to economic and military intervention in Libya

02.03.2011 22:43

AP News, March 2, has just announced “two U.S. warships entered the Suez Canal on their way to the Mediterranean, moving closer to the Libyan coast after orders from Defense Secretary Robert Gates.”

It is of great importance that the United National Antiwar Committee, UNACpeace.org, a major broad-based antiwar coalition in the United States, in the midst of escalating preparations for U.S. military action in Libya, has issued a unified statement opposing all forms of U.S. intervention in Libya, including No-Fly Zones and Sanctions.

This statement, drafted by well-known antiwar activist Kathy Kelly, was based on thorough discussions and unanimous decision of the UNAC Steering Committee. UNACpeace.org has more than 400 endorsing organizations and major bi-coastal antiwar demonstrations planned on April 9 in NYC and April 10 in San Francisco.

To have such a clearly defined position against U.S. sanctions, intervention or military action of any form and major mass demonstrations planned for April 9 & 10 mobilizing during this time of escalating war preparation projects UNAC into the center of the debate.

The statement of the United National Antiwar Committee is reproduced again below. As a member of the UNACpeace Steering Committee, I wholeheartedly support this statement.

The accompanying material is my own views and intended only as background information. I am submitting it to help combat a great deal of the U.S. war propaganda.

For Unity and Solidarity,

Sara Flounders, International Action Center & Member of UNAC Steering Committee

United National Antiwar Committee, UNACpeace.org Statement on Libya

At great risks to their lives, activists organizing to oppose oppressive, dictatorial regimes in the Middle East and North Africa have inspired us by their courage and determination.

We ruefully acknowledge past and continuing U.S. support for dictatorships and military rule in the region. We recognize that the U.S. has been directly involved in supplying weapons and other forms of support to regimes that have committed atrocious human rights abuses against civilians. Conscious of our responsibility to stop the United States from further manipulations that would interfere with movements on behalf of true democratic developments in other countries, UNAC calls for an immediate halt to U.S. intervention in regions and countries where mass mobilizations are challenging oppressive regimes.

We have seen the horrific consequences of U.S./UN imposed economic sanctions against Iraq, as well as the consequences of U.S./UN operation of “no-fly zones” over northern and southern Iraq, prior to the U.S. Shock and Awe attacks and invasion.

We therefore oppose any form of U.S. military or economic intervention in Libya, Egypt, Bahrain, Tunisia and other countries where movements are rising in opposition to dictatorships and military rule.

No thanks says the Libyan resistance
No thanks says the Libyan resistance

"Of course, you may be quite happy to sit back and watch Gaddaffi slaughter his own people."

I'm sure no-one is happy to do anything of the sort. However, there are many Libyans who have to trust in the imperial powers intervention.

"We will not trade a dictator with an occupier!" said one Libyan on TV.

Respect to the people of Libya

Oh yeah?

You and who's army Davy boy?

Like Blair et al before him, Cameron talks tough, like the playground weakling talking big because of his big bully pal.
Blair talked tough too, but could never invade Iraq himself.

Now Cameron struts around rattling his rusty sabre, threatening people with the might of 'Great' Britain, but for home consumption, Britain is 'broken',

Let's see Cameron challenge Qadaffi to a one-to-one fight if he's so tough. I back the desert-dweller over the coddled private school boy Wanker!

We should all sit on out arses and let Gaddaffi kill everyone

03.03.2011 20:40

The author is correct. We should have nothing to do with this country.
If Gaddaffi wants to kill his own people, let we should let him
