Peak Trouble: Navigating the Chaos
Alex Smith | 27.02.2011 19:12 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Energy Crisis | Sheffield
News of unstable oil, climate, banking and regimes begs the question: are we ready, personally, for difficult times? Dr. Jeremy Leggett, oil geologist, former Greenpeace campaigner, solar entrepreneur on world energy. Analysis of EU dependency on Libyan oil, connections to arms trade. Then historian and psychotherapist Dr. Carolyn Baker on new book "Navigating the Coming Chaos: A Handbook for Inner Transition."
How will we know when the crisis has come?
I'm Alex Smith, and I can't avoid this simple fact: we are all connected now.
This week on Radio Ecoshock, we'll talk energy news, with an eye-out for the early stages of oil depletion, while solar just gets cheaper. Dr. Jeremy Leggett, geologist, oil expert, climate campaigner, and British solar entrepreneur joins us for a no-holds-barred talk of the world.
What about cutting solar subsidies? Leggett says the industry is ready. Solar costs have fallen by 40% in the last 3 years, while conventional fossil plants have risen in cost almost the same.
In the second half of the show, we get back to solutions from the Transition Movement. This time our guest Dr. Carolyn Baker suggests we need to look deep inside. Are you really ready for the wild changes coming up in the next few years? Carolyn gives us tips from her new book "Navigating The Coming Chaos: A Handbook for Inner Transition."
We also talk Libya as major supplier of EU oil, and their buy-back of EU arms, including "crowd control" weapons from the UK.
And a short speech excerpt on the return of former military warlords in Guatemala. Could this happen to the USA, if they demobilize and close bases (being bankrupt as the Soviet Union was)?
All the short music clips you hear come from the new Radiohead album "The King of Limbs" except the end clip "Beginnings" by Chicago.
