Bouteflika has been in power since 1999, and amended the constitution to allow himself a third term. He claims to have won the election for his third term in 2009. However, opposition parties criticized Bouteflika's victory, due to the fact that several parties had boycotted the election.

Anonymous has announced attacks on Algerian state internet sites, and reports suggest that the Presidential site ( http://www.elmouradia.dz/) has already been taken down.

In Algiers police are attempting to seal off all entrances to the Premier Mai Square, to stop more protestors from entering. Numbers are now estimated at 5000. At least 50 women have bene arrested, along with 4 opposition Deputies.

A solidarity gathering has been called outside the Algerian Consulate in London 2-4pm in solidarity with the protests in Algeria 6 Hyde Park Gate SW7 5EW.
Algerian state tv has reported a "few dozen protestors" whilst crowd numbers are estimated at up to 15 000, and arrests could be as high as 1 500.New chants of "Bouteflika Serraq" (Bouteflika the Thief).Demonstrators report having their phones taken away by the police to stop them tweeting, and a video of an attempt to break out of a kettle has been posted.
