Stand-up Philosopher
A New Year demands a new start and a fresh approach to life – and right on cue comes Tim Freke, stand-up philosopher and spiritual entertainer. Tim comes to Bristol on 16th February to deliver a New Year wake-up call, and to speak about the mystery that lies at the heart of our lives.
Tim Freke has an honours degree in philosophy and is the author of over 30 books – but he has developed a playful persona as a ‘stand-up philosopher’ with a direct and witty style. He has based this stance on the role that ancient philosophers played as ‘spiritual entertainers’ who transformed people’s consciousness. The result is an evening of insight, paradox and laughter, delivered by someone with a contagious enthusiasm for life.

Tim’s ideas challenge us to look deep into the heart of the Here and Now. “Life is a mystery,” he says, “a mystery so awesome that we insulate ourselves from its intensity. To numb our fear of the unknown we desensitize ourselves to the miracle of living. We perpetuate the nonchalant lie that we know who we are and what life is. Yet behind this preposterous bluff the Mystery remains unchanging, waiting for us to remember to wonder. It is waiting in a shaft of sunlight, in the thought of death, and in the intoxication of new love.”

Tim appears regularly in the media – on documentaries and radio programmes like Radio 4’s Beyond Belief. His book The Jesus Mysteries was hailed as “a provocative, exciting and challenging book” by the Bishop of Newark – and the Daily Telegraph made it one of their Books of the Year, declaring it “an erudite and well-researched book stuffed with controversial ideas.” More details can be found at www.timothyfreke.com.

Tim’s talk is entitled The Experience of Mystery as a Doorway to Awakening. It takes place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16th February at the Pierian Centre, 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol BS2 8SA. Tickets cost £10 – and must be booked in advance on www.pieriancentre.com or info@pieriancentre.com or 0117 924 4512. Tim’s is the latest in the hugely successful series of Health and Wellbeing talks organized by the Pierian Centre.
