The Case to Close Temple Cowley Pools is Crumbling...

SaveTCP | 15.01.2011 22:03 | Health | Public sector cuts | Social Struggles | Oxford

We are getting more and more information, mostly forcing it out of the council via Freedom of Information requests, that refutes all the arguments they have used to push forward with their scheme to close TCP.

The latest information, however, is not from FOI, but from the independent assessment of the carbon footprint at each leisure centre. The Council has made the point, time and again, that TCP generates one tenth of the Council's carbon emissions. Looking at the last three years' emissions, TCP's went up by 50% between years 07/08 and 08/09 - why did it increase so much, why didn't the council mention this when saying TCP should close, and why didn't the council leisure team do anything about it?

The GOOD NEWS is that the latest figures show that Fusion has dramatically reduced TCP's emissions by two thirds, way below what is expected for a leisure centre of this type and size. So the carbon emission argument, like the financial one, like the transport one, cannot be used to argue for TCP closure.

We now have two NEW petitions, since the Council simply ignored the last one. See the Petitions page for more information, and/or click on  http://tinyurl.com/savetcp2 and  http://tinyurl.com/savetcp3 to sign online.
