Internet, insecure? please...

I have decided to make this post in response to what I keep hearing about not talking over the internet.

I constantly hear that the internet is insecure, we shouldn't talk about anything over it, etc. But if you're practising the right level of security, etc. how is it more insecure than real life? Can anyone give a real argument for this or is it just generally accepted technophobia? I would like for discussion to take place in the comments, thanks.
