Protest Outside Sarah Teather's Surgery, Friday 5.30pm - Today
Brent Fightback | 03.12.2010 08:52 | Education | Public sector cuts
Call out to demo outside surgery of Sarah Teather MP (Lib Dem for Brent Central) and Minister for Children and Families. Previously very supportive of axing all fees, Sarah Teather has become suddenly very quiet. Local residents want her to vote against raising tuition fees and keep her pre-election pledge. 5.30pm this evening in Cricklewood, NW London.
DO YOU LIVE OR WORK IN SARAH TEATHER'S BRENT CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY?
ARE YOU A STUDENT, A TEACHER, A LECTURER, A PARENT?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT EDUCATION SHOULD BE A RIGHT NOT A PRIVILEGE AND THAT WE ALL BENEFIT FROM MORE PEOPLE RECEIVING THE EDUCATION THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY AS DOCTORS, NURSES, TEACHERS, ENGINEERS...... ?
Before the General Election, Sarah Teather signed the following pledge:
“I pledge to vote against any increase in fees in the next parliament and to pressure the government to introduce a fairer alternative”
Now she is an Education minister in the government that is proposing to raise tuition fees to three times their present level so that students will incur debts of £9,000 for their fees for every year of their study on top of their loans to cover their living expenses. At the end of their courses they will be saddled with debts of £35,000 or more.
Parliament will be voting on this proposal next THURSDAY DECEMBER 9TH.
Will Sarah Teather keep the promise she made when she signed that pledge?
She has a surgery tomorrow, Friday December 3rd at the Mosque in Howard Rd, Cricklewood.
Are you able to come an meet her on her way in to show that we expect her to keep her promise?
If so, please be there from 5.30 pm.
You might want to write her a letter and deliver it to her in person
You might want to ask other people who can't come to sign your letter as well
You might prefer to make or bring a placard so that she can see what you think as she goes into her surgery
If you can't come in person, you could email her teathers@parliament.uk
University, school and further education students have taken to the streets to show their opposition to these plans and to the scrapping of the EMA, the means tested Education Maintenance Allowance of £30 a week that makes it possible for students to stay on in education between the ages of 16 and 18. In Brent, there are 4,500 young people receiving the EMA. Of course, they haven't got a vote, but most of them will at the next election.
The young people studying in FE colleges and school sixth forms now have been more pressured and tested than any previous generation. From the age of four they have been encouraged to work hard and achieve so that they can go on to university. Now that they are approaching that goal, their future is being snatched from them.
A cabinet of millionaires, aided and abetted by Lib Dems is trying to make the young pay for the crisis caused by the bankers
THIS IS BEING CALLED AT SHORT NOTICE SO PLEASE PASS THE INFORMATION ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO IS ONE OF SARAH TEATHER'S CONSTITUENTS, email them, twitter them, text them, phone them. Let's make our MP keep her promise!
