UEA occupation over

Statement from the occupiers

We, the occupants, have decided to end our occupation of the Council House. We have come to this decision because we feel that this action has been successful in that we have: Held a building for an entire working day with minimal planning, resources and manpower; succeeded in escalating the anti-fees and cuts campaign; taken focus away from a disingenuous politician; given solidarity to others affected by increasing fees and cuts, both to education and to the public sector as a whole; participated in a international wave of occupation; encouraged students to feel empowered and drew attention to a diversity of tactics including direct action.

We believe that we have shown that it is possible for students to stand up to the apparently overwhelming wealth and power of the university by controlling the situation and leaving of our own will and in our own time. The occupations main purpose was to bring the issues that were debated on campus tonight into sharp focus, and to show we have the ability to shape our environment and future.

We have been peaceful all day, and reject any accusations to the contrary. We would also like to draw attention to the absence of any fire extinguisher related incidents.

We’d like to thank everyone who contributed for helping us from outsid...e, and also the security staff, for being reasonable and friendly towards us.

Well done for ending it on your own terms. Now time to plan the next action!

PS Please don't make facebook the only way people can find out more, not all of us are willing to use those corporate data-mining sites you know!
