Following the failure of management to meet demands, occupation at Royal Holloway is still ongoing

The first student sit-in in Royal Holloway’s history is still continuing in the picture gallery corridor of the Founder’s building. Students from the Royal Holloway Anti-Cuts Alliance have been staging the sit-in since 5pm yesterday in order the pressure the management into joining the national student movement in publicly recognising the damage of the Browne Review and Comprehensive Spending Review. Also listed in the Alliance’s demands is full transparency of forthcoming cuts to all departments at the University of London college.

From 8pm last night a teach-in was held with speakers from the chaplaincy and the local Save our Services in Surrey campaign. Following a live web feed being set up with links from the RHACA blog, the students also staged a live web “folk-in”, celebrating Royal Holloway’s rich musical culture. Throughout the night the students received messages of solidarity from similar campaigns at universities across the country, as well as trade union movements and students as far afield as Tel Aviv.

The sit-in has continued into today as demands haven’t yet been met, and the Students’ Union will be holding a demonstration on campus later in the day.
