Subject: JUSTICE FOR BETY CARIÑO AND JYRI JAAKOLA

On November 25th, 2010, International Day against Violence against Women, women and men from Mexico and the world sign this letter that will be delivered to you on December 10th, International Day of Human Rights.

We remember that last April 27th, in the region Triqui of San Juan Copala, Oaxaca our colleague Bety Cariño, a human rights defender and the international observer from Finland Jyri Jaakola were killed in a cowardly paramilitary attack against a humanitarian convoy in which they participated.

We express our concern because after seven months, the murderers of the paramilitary group clearly identified as UBISORT have not been punished; and we do not see progress in the investigations of the PGR nor political will to resolve the case.

We know that in our sad Mexico of today, violence has become a daily issue, as a result of the disastrous policies of recent governments that we totally repudiate along with many more citizens. Particularly in the day, we denounce all murders of women, Bety and all other generalized not only in Ciudad Juarez but in most Mexican states.

We denounce the INJUSTICE system in our country in which human rights defenders and social activists are treated as criminals, imprisoned or killed and the criminals remain at large in complete impunity.

WE DEMAND PUNISHMENT FOR THE MURDERERS OF ALBERTA CARIÑO AND JYRI JAAKOLA AND WE DO NOT REST AT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVELS UNTIL THEIR DETENTION AND SERVING OF THEIR SENTENCE.

NO MORE VIOLENCE!

Comrades and friends, we would like to inform that within the framework of the campaign “Justice for Bety Cariño and Jyri Jaakola”, we are organizing within the Mexican Alliance for Peoples Self-determination (AMAP) which Betty belonged to, a day for collection of signatures to demand the punishment of the murderers. On the occasion of November 25th, International Day Against Violence Against Women, a press release will be sent announcing the day, on December 9th a press conference will be conducted, and on December 10th, International Day of Human Rights, the collected signatures will be delivered to the PGR (Procuraduria General de la Republica in charge of the legal case), External Relations Office and the Interior Ministry in Mexico City.
