War on Want calls on BT to "Hang up on the Occupation!"

On November 11th, War on Want campaigners assembled outside BT's HQ in London to protest against BT's complicity in Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people. Activists held up a seven foot high replica of the Apartheid Wall, unveiled a banner and disseminated flyers calling for BT to cut ties with Israeli telecommunications company Bezeq International.

On Thursday 11th November, as BT announces its half-yearly profits, campaigners from War on Want and other Palestine solidarity groups, including the Amos Trust and Jews for Justice for Palestinians, descended upon BT’s headquarters in London to highlight and challenge its complicity in Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinian people. This action took place as part of the international Week Against the Apartheid Wall called by War on Want partner organization, Stop the Wall.

Activists held up a seven foot high replica of the Apartheid Wall, unveiled a banner outside of BT's offices and flyered BT staff on their way to work. War on Want's Executive Director, John Hilary, handed in a letter for BT's Chief Executive, Ian Livingston, demanding BT cuts ties with Israeli telecommunications company Bezeq International.

A new report from War on Want shows that BT gives Bezeq International, an Israeli telecommunications company, preferential access to its products and services, even though Bezeq International provides services to illegal Israeli settlements, checkpoints and army bases in the Occupied West Bank. The report identifies BT as a signatory to the UN Global Compact, which commits the corporation to ensuring that it is not complicit in human rights violations.

Yasmin Khan, senior campaigns officer at War on Want, said: “Israel's illegal settlements are acknowledged to be a major obstacle to justice in Palestine. Yet BT is guilty of sustaining these settlements through its links with Bezeq International. It is time for BT to hang up on the Occupation and cut its ties with Bezeq.”

We need your help to put an end to BT's complicity in these crimes. Email BT now and tell them to hang up on the Occupation!
