Jon Hughes | 07.11.2010 23:12

Despite the BNP's defeat in Barking and Dagenham, the fascists have not gone away. The rise of the English Defence League is a concern for everyone. Short film of the Unite Against Fascism London demo. Interviews with trade unionists before the march set off. Interview with striking NUJ members as the march passed BBC Somerset House. Finish on the rally. George Galloway and Martin Smith speak.

Fight against all fascism and racism

The UAF is good at one thing only, double standards. The UAF is a sectarian and cowardly group that even though it has some good genuine activists, it has shown itself as part of the problem which has enabled the EDL and BNP to grow whilst undermining other progressive anti-racists ( see Newcastle and Whitechapel to name a few ).

Its uncritical alignment with reactionary elements of Islamists ( East London Mosque ) and its hysterical and often untruthful method of mobilising shows itself to be completely opportunistic in how it operates. So on one hand they fail to denounce the Islamic Conference at the Troxy in East London on the basis that it promotes homophobia, and the following week marches proudly with gay and lesbian londoners at the gay parade!!

To be anti-fascist, and to oppose the fascist mindset, means that UAF have to be consistent in this approach otherwise others like the EDL will exploit this and have won people over because of this inconsistency.

The EDL oppose Islamic extremism so therefore they are fascists? I oppose Islamic extremism too, does that mean I am a fascist?

Opposing Islamic Extremism doe not mean you are a fascist. Using Islamic Extremism and fear about Islamification alludes to the fact the leadership of EDL are using Islamic Extremism to promote a nationalist/patriotic agenda.

Why do EDL forums have dozens of articles about gang rapes, paedophiles, muggings all attributed to muslims? You act like there is a massive conspiracy ( 'cos thats what you are, conspiracy theorists who watch too much youtube! )

And the main reason people are against EDL is not their "stance" against Islamic Extremism, its your OWNE extreme agenda that is trying to organise a POGROM against muslims. You are wetting your pants over Luton in Feb, like you did in Bradford, because you want a race riot - you know that is the ONLY way using your tactics that will force the government to act against muslims.

To me that is what fascists have done on the past, and thats what the EDL are doing now.
