Support needed: SHAC prisoners having mail wihheld by Winchester Prison

helen earth | 28.10.2010 14:51

Jason Mullan (and possibly also Thomas Harris) have been refused all 'unconfirmed' correspondance since they were admitted to Winchester Prison on Thursday 21st October

According to Mr Berry on the switchboard at the prison, JJ (Jason) must pass names, addresses and phone numbers of anyone who is trying to get in touch with him to the prison, which will then phone people to confirm their details. Obviously JJ does not have peoples details, and can't receive them as their letters are being withheld.

Friends have attempted to confirm their details by phoning the prison and asking that their letters be passed on, but have been told that it must go through "another office", which Mr Berry would not give the phone number for...

Please phone the prison and ask to speak to the Governor to protest about this decision, which is unlawful, and appears to be both an attempt to isolate JJ and gain information about his friends and supporters.

It is possible that Thomas Harris is in the same position; both were jailed on Monday for actions against vivisection giants Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Please, to contact the prison is just going to affect JJ and the way the people that work within the prison respond to him, I understand this may not be the case and that the letters may just be held up. Please could you all refrain from calling until i hear further.

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THE PRISON

28.10.2010 17:02

I cannot stress and it is vital that we do not contact winchester anymore. As it is not on JJ's request and we must respect that.

I have just phoned..

Spoke to a lady who is involved with letters etc. She said that all letters went through censors (nothing new there) and were required to have the name and address of the sender on. Letters deemed to be a "security risk" would not get through. Maybe in a few days this will all be a bit clearer but she said it was not the case that any prisoner had his mail stopped unless the sender was approved by the prisoner. That is only the case with phone numbers. Has anyone else got through?

Keep on writing, but not phoning

Yes it is standard practice that the sender's name and address should be shown on letters to prisoners. That we just have to live with.

But clearly no-one is going to say anything to a prisoner, or to a prison censor, that would put anyone, including the prisoner, at risk. Anyone who doesn't want to be known to the authorities would obviously think twice before writing.

However the vast majority of people writing will be regular, upstanding members of the community who share our outrage about the political double standards involved in the sentencing of animal rights prisoners.

Be assured that if there is any irregularity regarding the passing on of letters by the prison authorities, the Vegan Prisoner Support Group will be on the case - after all it is the VPSG that through quiet and dilligent work over the years have established vegan dietary guidelines that now make life in prison a bit more tollerable. See  http://www.vpsg.org/

For the addresses (and numbers) of AR prisoners, see  http://www.alfsg.org.uk/

Agree

A very good friend of mine is in prison. We all need to make sure that we contact the prisoners nearest and dearest before posting anything on FB or Indy. I would contact this site and have this thread removed.

Someone who cares

DO NOT CALL.

28.10.2010 18:00

The consensus amongst JJs friends is that no-one should call the prison. It would appear that there is no special vilification of either prisoner. For years prisons have only forwarded letters with names and addresses on. They do censor every letter which is why it is always advised to never put anything on a letter that you would not want the police to see. Please do what Lucy asks.

DO NOT CALL - a message from Jasons partner

28.10.2010 18:01

I have already asked and people are avoiding, it is important that we do not call the prison to not give JJ a high profile, it is not his wish. Please respect that
