The EDL do not seem to distinguish between an 'Islamic extremist' and other followers of Islam. My personal experience has shown that most followers of Islam are no more or less extreme that followers of other beliefs - including Christians, Conservatives, Sikhs, anarchists, and many more.
Amongst other arguments to suggest that the EDL are fascist is their focus one one particular group of 'extremists' to the exclusion of all others. A standard quote, but given 20th century European history, one worth bearing in mind. The irony about the Jews (of which I am one if that makes any difference) and the links between the EDL and Zionism are not lost on me.
They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.
Anti-fash, not UAF
