Bioculture is a company run from the island of Mauritius, founded with the sole purpose of supplying thousands of primates to laboratories across the globe for use in vivisection.

We covered the details of the firm attempting to gain permission to establish a large colony of captive monkeys in Puerto Rico so as to supply US and UK laboratories with animals to use in experimentation. Over 4,000 primates, all caught in the wild, were to be shipped from Mauritius to set up this new breeding colony.

However, we received the excellent news today that the local senate, led by Senator Melinda Romero, have not only refused permission for the facility to be constructed, but have effectively banned the export, import, breeding and use of primates in laboratory experiments within it's constitutional boundry.

This is an amazing victory and certainly not to be underestimated. With the recent decision from El Al to no longer transport animals for experimentation, Bioculture's Israeli farm, Mazor, is facing an uncertain future, not having exported a single monkey since the policy was made. Nepal has also recently banned exports for vivisection and only one company will fly monkeys into the UK for labs. As these major blows come about through ongoing pressure, the global eye of the anti-vivisection movement is now turning onto Mauritius and the export of 10,000 primates annually for vivisection.
