Afghanistan Anniversary Vigil

JNV | 04.10.2010 10:15 | SOCPA | Afghanistan

End the War in Afghanistan / Remember the Dead

9am - 6pm, Thursday 7 October
Whitehall (opposite Downing Street)

Join Maya Evans (JNV & Peace News) and Susan Clarkson (London Catholic Worker) this Thursday (7 October) for all or part of a nine-hour vigil and name-reading ceremony to mark the 9th anniversary of the beginning of the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan.

Maya and Susan will be reading the names of both Afghans and British soldiers who have been killed as a result of the war. In 2005 Maya read the names of British soldiers opposite the Cenotaph in 2005 and as a result became the first person to be prosecuted under Section 132 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (SOCPA). As well as name reading there will also be a symbolic scattering of peace poppies, a chalking of names and readings of news reports and statements relating to the ongoing war.

PLEASE NOTE: As an unauthorised action within the boundaries of the SOCPA anti-protest zone this action carries a risk of arrest. See
