The English Defence League are planning to go to Leicester on Sat 9th Oct. Since the announcement of the date, a number of groups have confirmed their intention to oppose the far right group, including autonomous antifascists, the Muslim Defence League and Unite Against Fascism.

Leicester City Council has applied to the Home Secretary for a ban on any march by the EDL and the police claim to have intelligence that the EDL intend to attack a mosque and march to the predominantly Muslim area of Highfields.
As usual, the authorities, both political and religious, are urging people to stay at home, but hundreds of people are pledging to demonstrate against the EDL. A recent Indymedia post called for “an overwhelming presence of people opposed to the EDL” to show solidarity with the people of Leicester.
The location of the EDL demo has now been announced as Humberstone Gate East, near the former International Hotel, in Leicester city centre. It is not far from the Asian areas of Highfields and Belgrave Road.
