Recording sex via spy cameras is getting a rise out of people

Op/Ed article on the recent story regarding the spy camera in the college dorm and the uproar it crated when the sex video was sent out on line and the boy involved committed suicide.

The college dormitory is often considered a sacred and hallowed place where ones first real in depth sexual exploits often occur usually in a mix of alcohol and deep self exploration, however was violating this sacred and secret dorm room tradition really what has caused this firestorm of controversy and protest on the school campus where recently two friends secretly recorded their roommate engaged in sex?

While originally considered a practical joke the unintended consequences is that a young man committed suicide after discovering his two friends betrayed his trust and secretly recorded him having sex with another man and putting that video live on the internet. So maybe in part the malicious nature of the alleged perpetrators actions of recording and then posting that video on line for millions to see is what caused the outrage but I think it goes a little deeper than that.

This incident raises some very valid questions and ones that are very complex because where was the line crossed? Was it the fact they secretly recorded him, or was it that this recording was filmed in a college dorm room? Or was that line crossed when the video was sent live out over the internet for millions to view? Or “D”, all of the above?

Some people will argue that line was crossed when the camera was initially set up but to counter that argument I have to ask what about nanny cams, which are nothing more than spy cams with a politically correct name attached to them. I mean after all those nanny cams are secretly set up because people want to ensure there is no funny business going in their home. These cameras and are used to watch maids, service technicians, and the new puppy but in reality those cameras are often set up because there is doubt about the person they have in their home or the owners just want to know what’s going on when they’re away but, regardless the people being filmed often are unaware their private moments are being filmed.

In today’s culture cameras are everywhere and even nannies and maids are aware of these hidden spy cameras which are more the “norm” these days, after all if you can afford a nanny and a maid chances are you can afford a spy camera too.

Maybe the protest is the fact that people are finally standing up and saying enough is enough to invasion of privacy or at least I can only hope this is finally the case because cameras have gotten out of control.

We are a society of cameras, we have nanny cams in our homes, then we send our child off to school where there is a camera installed on the bus, if we are caught speeding on the way to work the camera on the signal light records the speed and sends us a ticket, if a police officer sees us speeding he pulls us over for a citation and that exchange is caught on the police officers dash camera. Then there are cameras in the court house, on the street, in schools and in every public building, hotel, bar, and even on our cell phones. We have cameras in places you’ve already accept them for a long time such as in the banks and at every ATM machine recording our every transaction and transgression, We are a nation of cameras recording every second of life but maybe the real problem is people are simply tired of smiling all the time.

All I can hope for it that this tragic story will have a happy ending in our social plight against cameras and I’ll be watching to see the outcome, but I will probably only be able to see it on video.
