Risk of another Chernobyl disaster with new EPR nuclear reactor design

The French Nuclear Phase-Out Network (Réseau Sortir du Nucléaire) has received new confidential internal documents belonging to French utility EDF that show that flaws in the Areva EPR nuclear reactor design, the same type due to be built by EDF at Hinkley Point in Somerset and Sizewell in Suffolk, could lead to a Chernobyl-type disaster.

Sortir du Nucléaire Press Release 30 September 2010

EXCLUSIVE: Confidential EDF documents show serious accident risks with the EPR reactor

On Monday 27 September, the French Nuclear Phase out Network "Sortir du nucléaire" received internal EDF documents, showing that the design and manufacture of the vessel closure head for the EPR in Flamanville could lead to a Tchernobyl-type accident.

Worse still, according to a memo written by the Head of nuclear fuel from EDF in 2001 (1), a Tchernobyl-type accident is possible on all French nuclear reactors. The EPR is also concerned.

Several EDF documents show that the number of welds and the type of steel used in some parts of the reactor vessel at Flamanville EPR may cause leaks. EDF considers that the leaks may, in turn, degenerate into a Tchernobyl-type accident. This type of steel and welds are part of the emergency shutdown system of the EPR and cover 89 points of entry into the reactor vessel.

EDF documents received by the network "Sortir du nucléaire" demonstrate that EDF engineers have designed parts of the vessel closure head for the EPR that not only endanger safety but also knowingly violate French law (2) relating to nuclear facilities under pressure.

For the Network "Sortir du nucléaire", the conclusion is obvious: in spite of all these issues, EDF persists in a policy that sacrifices security for profits! In view of the catastrophic consequences of an accident, this attitude is unimaginable and unforgivable.

Design flaws, increased toxicity of waste, untested technology, vulnerability to attacks (or even cyber-terrorism) ... Before the submission by EDF of a safety report for Flamanville the network "Sortir du nucléaire" wishes to remind everyone about all the problems with this reactor. In France, Finland and elsewhere, it is urgent to put an end to the EPR program and initiate the transition towards a future without nuclear power.

RE-TOOL THE ENTIRE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION.

30.09.2010 19:32

Coal, gas, oil, and atomic energy is destroying the planets livability and therefore the last forty-five years of ecological green revolution has brought into being the hi-tech tools to put in place wind, tidal, and solar power which transforms to electricity and is more power than can be used by society. No more blackouts. This non-polllution solution is given freely in natures kinder laws and provides work for all and forever more.

Electric motors with generators were invented over one hundred years ago. It was noted then that they could power the industrial revolution, and the trade union safety committees concurred that they would prefer that path to liberate them from the pollution that caused them early death from motivating the industrial revolution with coal, gas, oil and atomic energy. The trades unions ought therefore to take up the issue to put solar panels on every roof in the world. Black lung is no joke. It turns the miners lungs into cement before he dies in agony at too early and age. Mercy to the working class is to use union rates to re-tool the entire industrial revolution and end the move to aggressive war which promises not victory but extinction of the species, and all for the oil monopolies attempt to control all markets in the world with oil ownership and control.. End pollution wars, not endless wars for more and more pollution. Viva socialist liberation.

Wow! I didn’t realise that over 100 years ago we had ‘Atomic Energy’ These Union Safety Committees were way ahead of there time!

On a serious note, yes electric motors and generators have been around for ages, but what did the union safety committees suggest they were going to use to turn the generators? Water wheels? Donkeys walking round in circles? Keep in mind that 100+ years ago we didn’t have the technology we do today, wind and water capture devices were far far less efficient (wooden paddles), generators were basic and massively inefficient. You would have needed more than is practicable to generate the type of power needed to heat and run peoples homes, let alone an industrial revolution.

But your rant was quite good, where did you copy it from?

An Engineer.
