New campaign against Eton clothes shop, Sheffield and Rotherham

Sheffield Animal Friends | 11.09.2010 21:31 | Animal Liberation | Sheffield

Today SAF launched a new campaign against Eton, a clothes shop on Division Street in Sheffield selling fur.

For five hours, up to 15 activists stood outside with banners, placards and leaflets, asking members of the public to boycott the shop. Eton is the only shop we know of in Sheffield selling conventional fur (we are soon to start campaigning against a shop selling “vintage” fur) so this campaign will be a priority for SAF. Both the Sheffield and Rotherham branch will be targetted until Eton declare a fur-free policy.

We have demos planned for tomorrow (Sunday) at 2pm, as well as the coming Friday and Saturday. We are also encouraging people to contact Eton to complain about their shameful support for animal cruelty. See the SAF website for updates on the campaign.

Fur removed from the shop, but no declaration so far

12.09.2010 16:07

Eton had removed the fur items from the windows and the shop floor before we started the demo today. They haven't yet given us a fur-free declaration, and they claimed that the owner is on holiday for a few days. We'll continue to campaign until we receive a guarantee that they now have a fur-free policy, and aren't just keeping the fur in a back room for a few days, but we are confident that they will issue a statement soon.

Demos are still planned for Friday and Saturday (and possibly earlier in the week), but keep an eye on our website or send us an email to check if they're going ahead.

Well Done SAF

Good work Sheffield Animal Friends. There is no place for the sale of real fur in today's society so keep up the pressure until these people stop.

Just a thought:

My considered judgment, after years of scrutiny of, and sometimes harrowing activity in the anarchist milieu, is that anarchists are a main reason - I suspect, a sufficient reason - why anarchy remains an epithet without a prayer of a chance to be realized. Most anarchists are, frankly, incapable of living in an autonomous cooperative manner. A lot of them aren't very bright. They tend to peruse their own classics and insider literature to the exclusion of broader knowledge of the world we live in. Essentially timid, they associate with others like themselves with the tacit understanding that nobody will measure anybody else's opinions and actions against any standard of practical critical intelligence; that no one by his or her individual achievements will rise too far above the prevalent level; and, above all, that nobody challenges the shibboleths of anarchist ideology.

Campaign over

Today we went back to speak to Eton, found selling fur at the weekend. They have pledged not to sell fur again and have arranged to return the items in question to their manufacturer in Italy. Thanks to everyone who came along to the demonstrations or contacted Eton in protest at their support of this barbaric industry. Naturally, we will continue to monitor the shop but for now we are asking people to no longer contact them.
