Bulgaria Boycott Over Institutionalized Animal Abuse

Animal Programs Foundation calls people from around the world to cancel Bulgaria as a tourist destination.

Bulgarian cabinet is funding 7.5 M leva (near 4 M Euro or 5 M USD) for conducting an international advertising campaign between September 6 2010 and March 27 2011. European Regional Development Fund provided 85 per cent of the budget.

National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel, Euronews and Eurosport will start airing clips during prime time hours to feature the country's summer and winter tourist destinations, environmental and rural tourism and cultural historic heritage. Their websites also will be involved in this project. It is expected that about 608 million European households to be reached.

On the contrary, Animal Programs Foundation calls people from around the world to cancel Bulgaria as a tourist destination.

We consider Bulgarian government as an unique European pattern of national authority hostile for cats and dogs, the voiceless human's friends.

Bulgaria formally agreed in 2004 to the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals. Six years after, we are witnessing the government's outrageous disregard for key Convention's provisions. Our nation remains with no Spay/Neuter Assistance Programs, in violation of the Article 12. Commercial pet supply, demand and movements remain uncontrolled, in violation of the Article 8. And Humane Education Programs were not considered, in violation of the Article 14. So general public stay misled about the overpopulation issue and pet owners continue to rely on "good homes available".

Recently, in several Bulgarian cities people found skinned, slaughtered, hanged and poisoned dogs and cats. But authority did nothing to stop pet overpopulation. Illegal pound seizure is likely the main goal of the animal control across the country.

Boycott Bulgaria! All people who are concerned for the humane treatment to pet animals shall avoid the Territory of Darkness.

The main goal of Animal Programs is decreasing the dynamics of cat and dog populations in Bulgaria. The foundation activities are focused on dealing with two key factors - both authority's reluctance to launch effective companion animal management and people's misconception in pet breeding, supply and demand.
