The EDL - definitely not fascists, honest!

Ann Archy. | 29.08.2010 08:15

“It’s the middle of Ramadan” one local youth said, “as if we are bothered about this lot”

There was some good news today when the collection of skinheads and football hooligans laughingly known as the English Defense League (EDL) failed to draw the full support of their ‘league’ for their provocative Bradford demo.

The EDL - definitely not fascists, honest!

Despite hailing Bradford as ‘the big one’ only 700 EDL supporters turned up compared to 900 at last year’s Leeds demo. Feeling a little frustrated by this the ‘non-violent’ and ‘compliant’ EDL began to throw bottles, rocks and smoke bombs at the police and anti-fascist demonstrators. What’s that old saying about leopards and spots?

We should never feel complacent about the right wing and we should remain ever vigilant against fascism. But it is heartwarming to see such a drop in numbers when the group has only just celebrated its first birthday. For all their posturing it looks like the EDL have failed to find any support whatsoever amongst the everyday English people who they claim to represent.

So was the day a success in terms of opposing the EDL? To my eye it was, and to a large extent due to the failure to rise to the extreme provocation and baiting being aimed at the local residents. Instead of the old tactic of shouting ‘Nazi’ at the EDL (something which surely even the most hard nosed EDL supporter can now not deny given the chanting that was going on) and ineffective speeches-cum-paper-selling tactics of the UAF, action was planned and executed by the local population and a unified, defiant but peaceful show of strength was made. The EDL was shown in their true colours, they didn’t spark the race riot they so badly wanted and came off extremely badly in the eyes of the mainstream press whos attention they have been courting for some time now. Their claims to support the police will now ring pretty hollow and it will be hard for them to regroup and continue to recruit new members after this PR disaster.

And the city of Bradford? Still standing, still united and its residents still proud to be a part of one of the most multicultural communities in Britain.

The EDL have gone EDL back into the gutter where they belong..

The mood of the city in general today has been one of calm and local people have co-operated and supported the police by behaving sensibly or staying away. The community event at infirmary fields has been supported by local people and was well received.

pittsburghers show how to deal with provocatuers, these provacetuers are hated by decent people including decent people in security forces. The same types stirred up& committed murder on both sides in N. Ireland, in the 80s & 90s UK corporations wasted our resources as the biggest dealers of crowd control equipment in the world.
We can be proud of magna carta& the levellers, shame on corporate agents that do this& the EDL

Everyday people unite!

The EDL "failed to find any support whatsoever amongst the everyday English people" - so what sort of people do they represent, then? Not 'everyday' people, that's for sure. It's good to hear that everyday English people don't shout 'Nazi' at the EDL. Perhaps everyday people don't shout 'Nazi' because it is false, rather than because it doesn't work. It would be more accurate to shout 'ZIonist', given the EDL's politics, but in the left, that is not considered to be as bad...

church and state

What an ugly bunch they are. However, I find myself, worryingly, agreeing with one of the placards - getting rid of the Church of Englands' dodgy religion- I've read their 'bible' and it is violent, sexist, homophobic and contains a lot of primitive superstition and is generally unsubstantiated garbage. Hmmm - that sounds like a fascist book. And this 'church' stole our land ( stick that in your soup kitchen ) and when the poor into workhouses ( protestant work ethic that those rich Christian fash push ). Oh, they helped provide enough education and discipline in order to help the poor into the army. Hurrah. BTW I was forced into this church until I found Malatesta....Hallelujah. PS. I note the irony of fascists arresting other fascists. PPS. isn't this country run by neo-fascist politicians who like to operate on a war economy?
