I have recently had a very interesting conversation with a Muslim lady who told me that what passes for Halal i.e the mechanised slaughter of hundreds with some token prayer being uttered is nowhere near what it says in the Koran. Halal slaughter is supposed to be instant, by someone highly trained and very competant, consists of one stroke with a very sharp knife, the victim is supposed to be utterly unaware of his or her fate, nor should s/he be transported. Slaughterhouses are not in accordance with her beliefs she explained. She also said that taking a life was a VERY big deal, veganism was discussed. Some Muslims are vegan.
Abbatoirs are theatres of violent abuse, pre stunning is a sop to a squeamish public and ALL slaughter "Halal" or not is nothing short of murder. Neither Muslims or Jews eat pork and pigs often enter the scalding tanks still concious and are literally boiled. A campaign against meat eating in general is far more apt especially as Kosher and Halal meat enters the "normal" food chain from the bits unwanted by Muslims and Jews and very few meat eaters really care about this and after all if they are eating meat from some poor factory farmed chicken why would they suddenly get upset to know that there was no half arsed attempt to plonk that individual's head in an electric current when the murder was committed? In fact the electric current in a tank of water through which many chickens are put through often does not stun them at all but just adds to their pain and terror.

Foie Gras is in a different league entirely and has been banned in the UK for the gross cruelty involved, I think I am right in saying that Foie Gras would not ever be considered Halal. It is great that pressure is being put on those who sell it and good luck to those involved in this campaign.
